Hi again newbie here
I have just collected my van from the dealer and travelling back it bounced around like I was at sea!!
When I picked it up from the dealer it had a full size awning stowed under the rear fixed bed,I asked if I should put it above the axle but he said it would be fine.
Now I'm not sure so I have moved it above the axle,do you guys think this should solve the matter?
I'm towing with a 2003 v70 d5 with updated self levelling suspension, always stays at the same height no matter how much weight is put on it.
Cheers chris

yes it will make a difference to stability having the awning at the rear.should always go over the axle and any other items of weight you have goes there too.too lighter nose weight will also give you a bounce effect.you need to reach your 75 kgs nose weight or whatever yours is.mine is 92 kgs.some LRovers 150 kgs.

That's great thanks. Do you now what my nose weight should be or how I work it out?

should be marked on your towbar or 7 % of your MTPLM (gross weight)

My towbar has a pic of the tow ball and a arrow pointing down directly above it saying 75kgs next to it. So I assume my nose weight needs to be 75kgs?
Does this sound right ?
My van has a plaque on the side saying running order 1085 and mtplm 1340. So am I right in saying I add the 1085 to the weight I put in it ie awning etc and that gives me my actuall mtplm?

There are several things you need to know. Firstly what is the MTPLM of the caravan? When you know this you calculate 7% of that weight which should give you the caravan noseweight. You need to find out what Volvo recommend for maximum towball weight which probably is around 75kg. but whatever the figure is you need to aim for the noseweight that the car is allowed because too light or too heavy can have a detrimental effect on stability. To check your noseweight you can do it two ways which is the proper way or the cowboys way. The cowboys way is using a broom handle and bathroom scales and the proper way is to purchase a proper noseweight gauge. The dealers advice to leave any heavy equipment at the rear was incorrect as this is probably the very reason why you encountered a lot of bounce and that's why you need the specified weight on the towball itself.

Sorry, you entered the info before I posted.

1085kgs. is the MIRO (unladen) and 1340kgs. is the MTPLM (fully laden). So, 7% of 1340kgs. is 94kgs. which is 19Kgs. too heavy. This is the critical part why you need a noseweight gauge because you are going to have to shift equipment just rear of the axle till you achieve the 75kgs noseweight. Don't despair because I have exactly the same problem with my Volvo V50 which is also a D5 engine and that also is 75kgs. but my MTPLM is 1300kgs. which 7% of that figure is 84kgs. It just means that you are going to shift a bit more than what I have to. Once you have it loaded correctly once then you have a general idea each time you load up. That's caravanning experience.

As you are a newbie then a little extra information regarding noseweight, caravan loading and stability may be useful so here is a useful link with some good advice.

You're van will still bounce even if you have got all your equipment stowed in a safer place. They do that!!

Agreed. Getting the noseweight right will help reduce the bounce, but most vans don't have shock absorbers, so you will usually get some bounce from the suspension springs. Ours bounced a lot when we first towed it home empty, but is a lot better now we have some weight on the front.

Hi, we have an 05 V70 D5 with self leveling suspension and have found even when loaded correctly (as much as i can be) that for the first 2 or 3 miles i get quite a bit of bounce until the shock absorbers have stiffened up,

As others have said try loading correctly, try it, and move around things till you get a good ride.

Ours bounced or as we called it 'lopped' and i was unsure about the feeling of towing. we were advised to stow our awning up front, we opted to put it over the axel, and when we weighed the nose weight it was soooo heavy, like off the scale and we now stow it almost on the rear bunk bed to get the 75kg nose weight we need, once we got the NW right it tiwed like a dream!!   this was our first van, so had a few steep learning curves!

best place to be asking is on here!

Have you checked your tyre pressure? if your tyres are over inflated this could cause it to " bounce"  and under inflated will make the van feel heavy when towing. Like above you should put most of your weight over the axels then to the back to balance out for your nose weight. Sure you will sort it only towed our van a few times and now like a seasoned pro at towing lol.  17
