We started our return trip home yesterday afternoon after leaving a wedding venue, we were only minutes away from the M40, all was fine, got onto the M40 and just felt unsure the van just didn't feel secure, i sat around 45-50mph as i couldn't get over the feeling of it snaking a little, nothing major just a bit 'wobbly' and i after scrutinising the hubby over the hitching process, about 20 mins into th journey, i asked if he definately pushed the al-ko down all the way!      errrr no, we got disturbed by family while hitching up and it was obviously overlooked.

I jumped out and engaged it, and it started towing like our normal dream of a van!   i can not believe that would make such a difference!  it scared us and last night we made our own checklist to be laminated.

could have been a different outcome, and the biggest lesson was, if your not sure about the feel then stop and check it over!!!

A caravan should be a stable tow without an anti snake device. If your caravan felt unstable without it you need to check weight distribution & tyre pressures.

As above, I think you may need to have a think about the way its loaded.

It should tow fine with no stabiliser.

the stabiliser should just damp out those little wiggles before they start.

My common mistake is the breakaway cable. Several times i have pulled up to check and found it still wrapped around the brake handle.

I hitched up in a hurry due to heavy rain after a trip down to London, on arriving home I discovered that the electrics lead had been dragging and the plastic coating was damaged, so annoying and expensive I presume!

We once pulled away from a caravan servicing centre with our jockey wheel down. The service repair staff hitched us up and checked lights etc. they practically waved us off as they watched us pull off. It was a couple of hundred yards before we noticed something was wrong. Pulled straight over and remedied the mistake. Just goes to show that you can't rely on anyone else to do the job properly. We were stunned that they let us drive off. Maybe they knew and wanted us back as a return customer when our jockey wheel got bent !!

As Tents and Grampian state, the lesson here is that something is wrong with your outfit. Check your weights, tyre pressures and general loading are all correct. The stabiliser shouldn't make much difference.

As you say, a lesson to be learnt, hopefully the correct lesson is learnt. Don't get too bogged down with the stabiliser and never rely on it to stabilise an unstable outfit.

let me get something straight here, it certainly wasn't snaking all over the road, something was just bugging me that it didn't feel 'quiet' right, we check tyre pressures and nose weight before we hitch.

it was meant as a friendly and what i considered useful piece of information on how easy it is to get distracted. And to go with your gut instincts, rather than keep going and ignore them. maybe just maybe, one day someone having read this might think to themselves about it and save an accident, i certainly recall advice from this site regularly!!

guess my latest lesson learnt is to keep my findings to myself!! 17

Shame you took it that way.

But who can honestly say that someone out there cannot recommend some improvement or a different way of doing
something that maybe better.

With mine Adding the spare wheel to the front locker made a big improvement into the way it towed and one less item to move when pitching.

If someone drives off without engaging the stabiliser and finds the outfit is unstable then maybe they will learn two things from this thread. I always used to do a few miles without the stabiliser to make sure the outfit felt right before engaging it. I no longer use a stabiliser because it makes no difference if your outfit is stable.

No, your latest lesson learn't is that you do not rely on stabilizer to keep your caravan stable. I suggest you act on the advice contained in this thread. Even if you have learn't nothing from this thread then certainly others will have. Once posted on ukcs, threads exist for the benefit of all forum users.

Latest lesson is...

Maybe its because the caravans 100kg over the cars maximum towing weight?

Maybe?

I put my hands up and say I made a mistake once like that and didn't engage my alko and didn't realise until I got home, but I didn't notice any difference, this is the first van I've ever had with an alko.
But if I learned one thing from it, i do better checks when leaving site.

Well said! and I'm also finding lately that my opinions get slated too due to people who try to dominate this forum and consider that their answer is the only one that is correct. I read books with related links to caravanning first before I ever ask on here (which is rare) and if everyone did the same a lot of personal knowledge would be gained and unnecessary debates avoided. Your personal input regarding the stabiliser handle being left up cannot be found in any text so it's an experience of caution handed down to others like you say. However, the word 'stabiliser' is a selective word to be used with much caution on here also along with the words 'tyres' and 'noseweight' too so like you advised, it's best to read what you need and keep the rest to yourself because as you have found out for yourself with this thread you get little praise from a minority for what you thought was good advice.

Well said tango55 I thought that owennicki made a very good point and showed considerable skill (in my opinion ) in being able to tell that something was not quite right from what I have seen over the years   alot of caravanners wouldn't know if a wheel was missing

sorry but have to disagree with above,i think in this case the advice/comments offered was good advice.
the op states the caravan was snakeing a bit,and they had to drive at 45/50 miles per hour.well that's just not right and there may well be an issue with loading.
As Davecoaches says he could feel no difference either with or without a stabilizer fitted, and surly that's how it should be?
