If you can give me some details regarding your Rover first ie. year of model, engine size, auto or manual, saloon or estate and diesel or petrol I can find the necessary weights to give you as a guide what weight caravan you need to be looking at first. If it's not suitable for your needs then you can move on regarding changing you car to something more suitable.

You would need a lightweight 2berth, 750kg all up weight or less. For this you need to be looking on ebay for something quite old & cheap, a late 80s ABI Marauder or Monza would do the job for example. Probably £500 or less at this time of year but check caravan body carefully for damp. Your car would be very slow on hills. If you want a bigger caravan you need a bigger car. A diesel Mondeo if you can find a good one, makes a good cheap towcar for a larger caravan.

A Rover 75 diesel makes an even better tow car and it's more comfortable and quieter and better mpg etc etc

On this particular 2002 model hatchback with engine size of 1.4i petrol with a manual gearbox the details are as follows:

Minimum kerbweight = 1020 kgs. / maximum towing weight (braked trailer) = 1000 kgs. / engine power = 84 BHP / engine torque = 81 lbs./ft.

Working on the recommended 85% match you would be looking for a caravan with an MTPLM (fully laden weight) of around 867 kgs.

Regarding the engine size, pulling power and restricted caravan weight I think realistically you need to be lookin at a better towcar really. If your decision is to change your car then you have to decide what is best for your needs such as a 4x4, MPV or estate car etc. and whether you prefer something more economical and going for a lighter 2 berth caravan.

I agree with the above. If you factor in towing nearly double the weight of the Rover 25, you can realisticly imagine what it would be like driving with half the power available, ie, 40 BHP and 40 pounds of torque! It will be extremely heavy going!

Maybe a trailer tent would be about the max with a Rover 25.

You really need a bigger car to be honest.

We towed a Sprite Alpine in the 80's with a Y reg Vauxhall Astra Mk1 estate 1.3 75bhp, didn't have a lot of issues, bit short of puff on hills but it did Cornwall a few years without problem.

We didn't hold too many people up either.

I wouldnt put that 1400 engine under to much stress as they are prone to blow the head gaskets, tentzs advise is bang on dont go any heavier

That wasnt a bad engine in the MK1 Astra though Peter, by sharp contrast the engine in a Rover 25 is generally known to be made of chocolate im afraid and fairly delecate!
