Poor old Taxi Bob. He's just nuts about 1.9tdi Skoda Oktavias, that's all. I looked at a few of them before I bought the Avensis. Nice cars...... all clocked though. Ex taxis?
Lets hope Bob didn't take the photo then put it on the web all from his iPhone, at 50mph.
Thanks for all the advice re alternative tow cars. I'll have a look at some of those recommends & maybe try moderating my driving style, though if I had a 6th gear I think I might have found it by now. The difference in revs between 4th & 5th (top) gear on my Avensis is that much, eg at 60mph 5th is 2200rpm & 4th is 3000rpm, that no economy advantage could be possible.
I don't think my wife, who has a driving licence she never uses & is always lecturing me on my driving, has sussed out the motorway towing speed limit yet, so I have done the odd 70mph but Big Brother is everywhere these days, even the motorways, & I don't need any more points. When I was young & foolish & had the Audi A6 V6 2.5tdi, I got right up the noses of some of our German cousins doing some towing speed testing. Alko stabilizer......excessive Mph...... rock steady.
Gross weight on our van is about 850 without checking but it's a moot point as I only ever travel with the bulk in the van & the weight in the car.
It's good to hear that your Avensis is doing well Steve. Is it the earlier model/body shape? They were supposed to be very good.
I've been wondering, since I started this thread, whether I could save myself the aggro of changing the car & just buy one of these Diesel Tuning Chip things. Have just been looking on a site called ChipExpress. Any advice?
I’ve just been talking to a caravanner running an Audi A6 with the legendary 1.9tdi 130ps engine. With a larger van than mine he gets mid 30mpg & no noteworthy loss of power. Same year as my car, same miles on the clock. Offered him a swop & a grand but he was having non of it.
So, start looking for a new car or chip this one?????? Decisions, decisions!

I have a BMW 320D Touring Auto 2002 which now has 202,000 miles on it. My previous 900kg loaded ABI Sprinter I got 36mpg towing. I've just changed to a 1300kg loaded Elddis Jetstream and the mpg is now 29-30 which is still good in my eyes.
Mine had all the crucial work done already like the turbo, injectors, breathers, crank pulley and was an ex-NHS company car with motorway mileage which didn't bother me (196k when purchased). Really happy with it and for 2k it was a good price in my eyes with full leather, bluetooth, PDC, towbar and MFSW etc..
I'd also vouch for anything with a VW 1.9 TDI engne fitted, A great engine if looked after with regular oil changes, cambelts, pulleys, water pumps, etc.. thay can do silly mileages.
I had a Seat Leon(Golf, A3, Octavia platform) and it was a really good workhorse.
Superbs are a good car (Stretched Passat. A4 platform) you just have to watch the water ingress around the pollen filter, this knocks out some of the lights due to the modules being on the front floor like in the early Passats.
Pick a good one and you're laughing.
Some really good tow cars out there for reasonable money.
With a bit of research there is a perfect tow car for any budget.
The VW TDI is a great engine. The only issues to get concerned about are the camshaft on the 1.9 TDI 150bhp versions and the oil pumps on the early 2.0TDIs which can destroy an engine if they let go. Other than that, it's oil changes, belts, pulleys, water pumps and the odd injector and you have a lump that will do lunar mileages, pull like a train with reasonable economy.
