We have a volvo XC70 (kerb weight 1850) which I assumed could pretty much tow anything. We currently have a light caravan but I want to change.

Today I have fallen in love with a van, but I have seen that the MIRO is 1500 and the MTPLM is 1800. I've checked what tow car and it says the ratio is 97!!! However we are planning to get a seasonal pitch so it will only need to be towed there and back (eventually)

So if we didnt fill it up when we took it would that mean it is ok? Thank you

what does volvo say re max towing weight?  if it is less than the weight of the van and you have an accident  you are in bother    you can tow 100% as long as you do not exceed the manufacturer's max

The max figure as stated in the handbook is an advisary it has no legal implications, though personally I would have thought it unwise to exceed it. The max towing capacity is defined by the maximum train weight and that depends upon the actual weights of the car and its trailer, and is plated on the car. The maximum train weight is the one you must under no circumstances exceed.
