OK I have gone through the threads, read loads and am now more confused!

Car is a 2004 CTDi SE Civic. Plan on towing an unbraked trailer.

Question 1 Most of the guidance appears to be that I can tow an unbraked trailer up to 750kg as long as it does not exceed 50% of the cars weight and this is where the problem start:

Some guides show the kerb weight to be 1311KG though the VIN plate under the bonnet shows a max car weight of 1750KG (the number underneath this is 2960 so have concluded this is the max combined weight) while the V5 has a max permissible mass of 1760 - which one do I take for starting my calculation off? as this gives a range of 660 to 880KG?

Question 2 Do I base my calculations on actual trailer weight or the max weight on the trailer plate. I am interested in the Brenderup 1205s which has a max gross of 750kg. In reality I am only ever to load between 350 and 450 KG total weight. The 1205 is better for my purpose of carrying camp stuff and bikes mounted to load bars rather than it's smaller cousin the 1150s which has a max plate weight of 500kg as the 1205 is wider and longer so bikes will not be hanging off front and back!

Question 3. There is a small chance of travelling to France sometime next year. I understand there is a max trailer weight in France of 500KG unbraked - again does anybody know if this is actual or plate weight.

Hope this makes sense. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Dan

Your car might have an unbraked towing weight limit of less than 750kg so check that first, some cars only allow 500kg max unbraked so check in your car handbook, but if actual weight of trailer is well under 500kg you will be legal. You go on actual weights to stay within car's tow weight limits not plated weights.

The confusion arises because plated weights not actual weights are used to determine driving licence category required. I don't know about French regulations but I've never heard of anybody being weight checked there.

Thanks There Tentz,

Looking at the manual it is 500kg unbraked. Looks like I will go for the larger and stick to my loading limits!

I am fine ref the licence as I am passed my test some time ago, so have the historical weight benifits.

Cheers

Dan

Unbraked trailers are a maximum of 750kg OR half the unladen kerbweight of the car. Whichever is lower.

Thats the legal bit.

But some manufacturers have a lower limit. The civic hatch? 2004 has a maximum of 500kg.

So you cannot have a trailer that exceeds that amount.

500kg appears to be your max limit but check your log book it will be on there.

We have previously owned and towed a trailer with a 53 plate Honda Jazz 1.4 Sport which is similar in size and statistics to your Civic 04 plate, likewise the maximum laden weight for an unbraked trailer was 500kg, and a max nose weight of 50kg.

The trailer was a Daxara 145 with built up sides and a lockable lid, fully laden it was about 425kg and about upto limit on its noseweight, as its often difficult to balance out the smaller trailers by simply just putting heavier stuff over or just behind the axel, as they are so short anyway, so the heavy tent canvas and poles, gas bottle and table always got packed towards the front to give greater stability.

Whatever trailer you buy, I would strongly advise you to buy one with a jockey wheel fitted, it sure does make life a lot easier when manually handling the trailer whilst loaded.

The jazz has an unbraked trailer limit of 450kg, braked 1000kg. Nose weight 02-09 60kg, after 09 it's 95kg (checked with Honda as seemed high). I know the civic is lower, 60kg (I think).
