Help guys, I've just sold my box trailer, it plugs into out twin electric towbar no problems, but the people who have bought our trailer traveled from London today to pick it up, they had a Kia car which was left hand drive, with a new tow bar fitted and a single socket, when they plugged our trailer in it didn't work, just the number plate lights on 1 light worked??? I'm away on an oil rig so I'm only relaying what my wife has told me, she plugged it into our car to prove that it worked fine but wouldn't work on their car, now in thinking its either a problem with the car being a left hand drive? Faulty wiring on their car or its been fitted with the new 13pin socket? But would my normal 7pin socket have fitted into it? Or did they simply need to buy a 13-7pin adaptor? They are coming back on Tuesday as they didn't want to risk driving it back to London without the lights working, London to Grimsby is a near 4 hour drive

7 pin will not fit into a 13 pin.

They need an adapter.

Well from what I've Been told by my wife the plug fitted in so it's very doubtful that its got the 13pin socket fitted so must be a problem with the wiring on their towbar!

The 7 pin plug on your trailer couldn't possibly have fitted the socket on the Kia, if it was the 13 pin type. Since the hopeful buyer managed to get one light working, it would appear from this that the Kia must be fitted with a 7 pin socket, in which case, I suspect the wiring on the Kia to be faulty.

If the car came from Europe (left hand drive) it would, I expect, have standard 13 pin wiring as that has been the standard in Europe for some years before we got it here. The two systems can't be used without an adaptor. The good news is that Milenco do an adaptor which only costs about £8. How do I know this? Well I have 13 pin electrics on my Sorento but I have a 7 pin plug on my lighting board (bikes) and I have successfully use the adaptor with that board. Can your wife get to a local caravan dealer to try and source an adaptor. This is what I have.

David

The 7pin 12n plug/socket is used on continent for trailers & older caravans so most likely faulty wiring on car socket. As stated it would be impossible to push 7pin plug into 13pin socket even if you forced it.
