Hi. We have just taken ownership of a second hand Kia Sorrento which has a Brink detachable towbar fitted. When my husband tried to put the towball on it fitted on well with no problem, but it has a lock and key with it. When we tried to lock it nothing happenend. Is this lock to prevent it being stolen, or is it necessary to have it locked before using the towbar for safety/ operational reasons?
If its like the one i have which has a little lock that you insert into the gap after the release mechanism has locked on
I suppose its really a theft detterent but it will stop the mechanism from releasing as well, but do you think it would release without the lock on as it does seem to lock on with a lot of pressure as you know when you try detaching the towball
If it is like the detachable towbar that was fitted on my old Zafira, how it functions is the towball is pushed up and it automatically engages and locks itself. What the key is for is to unlock the towball which then just disengages and drops out with a slight tap.
Thanks for the info. Hubby has given all parts a good clean and greased the lock. It is now working intermittantly. Think it hasn't been used for a while so the parts need freeing up a bit.
The only purpose the key lock seemed to have on my Brink Detachable was a theft deterant, when it was locked you could not turn the sprung knob where as when it was unlocked you could. The Wesfalia Detachable I now have the key can not be removed unles it is locked.
