Hi, ive made a mistake with the towing wheights the vans max is 1300kg not 1500 and max payload is 249, does this make any difference to the towing ratio with this vheicle thanks

Should be a reasonable match then, but be prepared to use gears on hills as petrol engine will not pull as well as diesel.

If you have an old Freelander be prepared to be bounced from here to eternity!!!!!

Terrible tow car I am afraid. We went to Ireland with one years ago and even I felt car sick and I was driving!

I do hope so but I think it was about the same age. Can't remember!

We swapped it for a Sorento which was a good tugger but such a harsh ride.

Unfortunately, the mods and upgrades don't particularly come into the equation with the match on the towing ratio.

2002 Freelander 1.8 has a kerbweight circa 1450kgs (varies slightly between 3 and 5dr), with a towing limit of 2000kgs. As the van's got an MTPLM of 1300kgs (which is your maximum/all-up weight of course and includes your payload), then this equates to a match of approx 90%.
This is an acceptable match if you're happy to tow at this ratio, but I'd echo Tentz comment plus be aware of Johnks's obvious experience with one too.

hi, i cant comment on your petrol engine, but we used to tow with a freelander td4 diesel, we had a 2003 model then a 2006 model.

i remember the ride as being fine for a four wheel drive.

We used to tow an eldiss 535 that had a higher max weight to yours, but as there was only 2 of us we used to travel light and put most of the heavy stuff in the car.

i had ours chipped to increase the bhp.

We have had a 1.8 petrol and a td4 2L, our head gasket on the 1.8 ( common problem) as a tow car it wasn't the best, it was a good match for our caravan we had at the time 83%, the td4 however was fantastic as a tow car.
We may of just got a bad 1.8 though, It wasn't bouncy though neither of our freelanders were bouncy rides, the 1.8 it was very stable and on the straights flat roads it was a pleasure, just didnt like hills very much, it got up them but it definitely struggled more than the td4 we later bought 2004.
If you could later on change to a td4 with the BMW engine , you'd have a really good tow car for your van.

The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.
