What weight do you use for the weight of my car for towing as the log book says, MPM 2070kg and mass in service 1765kg? also the towing limit is 2000kg, but the stamp on my car door sill has 4 different weights on it? what are they? Also I passed my driving test in July 1999, so am i right in thinking i can legally tow a caravan upto a maximum of 3500kg as long as the caravan isnt more then 100% of the weight of the tow car and obviously isnt over the limits of the car or do I need to take the B+E tests? My wife passed her test just over 2 years ago and according to our driving licence counterparts we both have b,e in the provisional entitlements??? im confused.com

Axle weights on the plate also and the gross train weight.

If you passed after 1997.

Add the cars gross laden weight and the caravans gross laden weight that must be less than 3500kg.

The caravan must be less than the cars unladen weight.

If the mass in service is 1765 then that doesnt leave much for passengers and luggage. With a 2070kg gross.

Are you sure thats the correct figure? My car weights 1564kg and the gross is over 2000kg.

From the figures you put a caravan with a gross laden weight of 1430kg would be your limit.

Unless the cars towing limit was less for some reason.

The car is a 2007 (57) registration Mitsubishi Outlander, according to what tow car i can tow more then 1430kg as i checked the bailey senator virginia that we recently hired had a mtplm of 1492 and gave us an 84% match

What are the figures on the plate on the car, these are the ones that are definitive.  The top one is the Maximum gross weight, the second one is the maximum train weight, the third one the front axle maximum load and the fourth one the rear axle maximum load.

So with a 1999 licence you need to add the maximum gross weight from the plate of the car to the maximum technical permitted mass on the caravan plate and if the sum is less than 3500kg you have a good start, then you need the unladen mass of the car ( you should find this figure on the cars V5 document where it is described as mass in service). you need the caravans maximum weight to be less than the cars unladen mass.  Providing these two conditions are met then tou have a licence to drive that combination.

Now look at the plate again and take note of the maximu train weight you must at all times keep the sum of the actual weights of the car and the caravan less than this figure. Your towbar will also have a plate on it that gives the maximu m  noseweight, you must not exceed this figure.  Now go out and have a good time, other limits in other places ie the cars handbook are just advisary figures and have no compulsory basis in the road traffic acts and other similar legislation.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

The maximum MTPLM that you could tow on a B licence seems to be 1655kg which is the kerbweight of the vehicle. However chances of achieving this is virtually zero.
In essence has to be 1140kg which is 3500kg minus the max gross weight of the vehicle 2360kgs. You need a caravan with MTPLM of 1140kg to be safe.
If you have B+E the Bailey Virginia is okay. Ff you had been stopped while towing the Virginia and the car was loaded with 2 adults, 2 children, fuel plus luggage it may have been close to its max gross weight. That plus the MTPLM of the Virginia could have taken it over the 3500kg mark.

Yes provisional entitlement. So you dont need to apply for a new category to take lessons and a test for the B+E.

You must he a qualified instructor in that category.

The vehicles gross weight seems a bit low compared to the kerbweight.
From your figures, 4 adult passengers weighing 12 stone each would overload the vehicle.

Thats without luggage etc.

You were towing illegally with that hired caravan. If stopped you would have been in serious trouble.
You would not have been allowed to tow the caravan any further.

Points and fine...

Not having a full licence for that category B+E,
No L plates,
Not being insured because you dont have a full B+ E licence,

Expensive mistake.

Ok so I started out confused now im really confused, the plate on my car says 2360kg, 4460kg, 1-1090, 2-1280kg my logbook states my mpm as 2070 and my mas in service as 1765, so i asume i should use the figure of 1765 as my maximum weight of the caravan i should be towing but ideally be 85% of that figure, so whats the figures of 2070 on my log book and 2360 on the plate and which 1 should i use as my fully laden weights to keep me right, i think im going to have to do the B+E test to be honest because im going to be cutting it fine to be under 3500kg especially when you start adding bike racks and the amout of stuff we take on holiday with us :(

Forget the figures in your owner's manual as they are not relevant as you do not have a B+E.
If stopped by the police, they will check the VIN plate to see the maximum gross weight of the car and then check the MTPLM of the caravan. If those two add up to more the 3500kg you have an issue if you only have a B licence.
At the moment the maximum MTPLM you can tow is restricted to 1140kg. To tow a Virginia caravan behind the current vehicle you will need a B+E.
Towing anything above 1140kg may also have implications on your insurance if there is an issue involving tow car or caravan.
I am surprised that the hirer allowed you to tow that caravan as you only have a B licence. You were lucky.

thanks for the replies.

yes ive just spoken to the hire place and he admited his wife had made the mistake in letting us take the van because she had misinterperated the B+E in the provisional section of the counterpart thinking that I had the B+E on my licence so after ive passed the B+E what is the maximum i can tow with my car?

I think you can tow a braked trailer up to 3500kg or the maximum braked weight your car can tow.

You can tow whatever your towcar allows after you pass the test.

You can have a 2.5ton RangeRover and tow a3.5ton trailer with it.

After you pass you are recommended to tow 85% of the cars unladen weight. And advised never to exceed 100% but if its legal then thats your choice.

Take the test or buy lighter caravans. My sister just buys caravans that are less then her unladen kerbweight.

Ive been towing for many years and my caravans only around 70% of my cars kerbweight.

Well some of the caravans im looking at are 90% of my cars unladen weight and even the lighter caravans ive been looking at put me over the 3500kg, so basically once ive done the test I can tow upto my cars towing limit which is 2000kg, thanks for all the help guys, I dont understand how we have to use the cars unladen weight because you cant drive a car without a driver or fuel, that adds to the weight straight away, i take it thats why what towcar use the 150kg ballast added to the cars kerb weight

Put simply the maximum weight of caravan that you can tow with your licence is one that is plated to weigh no more than 1120kg, as any more than this will make the maximum authorised weight greater than 3500kg, this is a licence restriction and there is no leeway whatsoever on those figures

If you take your test to add the E to your licence then you may tow whatever mob inaction of car and caravan where the actual weights of the cr and caravan when you leve home is less than 4460kg, You just need to know the kerbweights of each part and add in what extra weights you add, which will give you a reasonably accurate figure. However you would be well advised to never tow a trailer that has an actual weight of more than 1765kg.

If you are unclear please keep on asking, we will continue sorting tings out for you till you are sure.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

You need to look for the smaller lighter vans.

There are family sized vans out there with a gross laden weight of less than 1100kg.

Bailey Orion 430-4 or 440-4 if your looking at new, Brochure shows 1100kg max.

Elddis Xplore 304.

All within your legal weight. And many more.

And towing over 100% maybe the biggest mistake you ever make.

When the wind catches it or some mishap the caravan will have more weight than the car and it will decide when your going.

The results are likely to end in tears.

Extreme case and stupid i know but look on youtube for the "renault 5 caravan crash" towing twin axle caravan up a hill.
Then see what happens when the mass of the van wins over.

Thanks for the replies I am definately going to do my b+e test ASAP, I definately won't go over my unladen weight of 1760 but I think I may end up over the 85% if I get the caravan I and especially the wife wants as it puts me at 90% as it weighs just over 1600kg, and I definately don't intend to exceed the max gross train weight of 4460kg! It's definately in lightened me.

Reading the complicated regulations regarding what you can drive and what you can tow these days makes me think that there is some benefit for being older (not yet 50 but very close ) and I also decided to take and pass my bike test a year or so before the 2 parter came in, the bike one is going to be even more complicated for younger riders starting out from next year as well.
