hi, thanks for your input but you are missing the point, I know the weight of their caravan and i know that the weight of the passat and I know that the caravan is within 85% of the weight of the car.
I can get advice on the cars kerbweight via the caravan club website matching service.
The reason for the post is to ask other owners of the 105 bhp model whether their cars have suffered the same mechanical problems as the 140 bhp model. Such as injector problems and even worse oil pump failure.
The 105bhp engine is based on the old unit from the B5, and doesn't have the injector and oil pump problems.
The oil pump problems only happened on a batch of cars (mostly 2006) with the 140PD engines (down to a faulty bought in component), the injectors have now been retrospectively covered by VW agreeing to foot the bill (only after a massive amount of bad publicity).
Seems the 170 is the one to go for, although the CR engines are much nicer but may be out of your price range.
I had the 140PD Sport Estate, which was a fine thing to tow with, but I had the oil pump go, the cam belt tensioner fail the day after belt was changed (another quite common problem due to bad design) and after two engine rebuilds in 72000 miles, endless rattles, squeaks and a handbrake which worked less than a French air traffic controller I was thrilled to see the back of it.
The 105 model isn't the nicest engine in the world, but it is economical and pretty much bullet proof. You can pick them up cheaply, and if you want a bit more go then get it remapped.

The 105 bhp is bullet proof, just change the oil every 10K, the only thing that may go but they are cheap enough to replace, is the EGR valve, and if the DMF goes, you can get a single clutch system fitted for a quarter of the cost of a new DMF, mine cost me £350 fitted
I have the same engine in my skoda and have covered 220,000 miles so far and have only changed 1 egr valve.
They love the cheaper Asda diesel
They are insurance group 6 for the 105 and 13 for the 170
RFL 120 py
FC from 48 upwards best was 68 mpg
