I have a quesion that you guys may be able to help me with. I am looking for annual European breakdown cover for my car and caravan. Not the biggest or flashiest outfit on the road but i am finding it difficult to even get a quote let alone find a decent value deal. Tow car is Kia Sorento diesel, caravan is Bailey Orion 560-4. Max. train weight is 3985kg. Caravan club mayday cover has no length/weight limit but only covers UK. Green flag cover Europe but weight limit is 3500kg so is of no use to me. Does anybody else offer a decent level of cover for us caravanners who want to adventure to Europe. Also how much did you need to pay for the cover and if you were unlucky enough to need to use the cover, how good was your experience with your company of choice. I am amazed at how painfull it is to simply buy an European yearly breakdown cover for touring. Hope you can help

Hi, I have not used them, but have you tried these guys?
Drive24-7
UK and European Breakdown Cover from less than £3.25 per month
If you dont want to be bamboozled when buying breakdown cover then you may be looking in the right place. The market is littered with confusing offers and incentives which can be totally misleading. The cover from Drive2 ...more
ADAC is just a breakdown service and while there good they not in the same league as Red Pennant .
You only get what you pay for with European breakdown and personnel insurance and while RP may not be the cheapest there service is second to none
I AM a strong supporter of Red Pennant for traveling abroad
with a car & caravan even though I was a member of Britannia premium breakdown service,& I am now a member Of the German company ADAC.
How ever If you accept that there is limitations to the written policiesof both these companies, for the cost of less than £90 per year both companies will give you very good cover for both your car & caravan, in the UK & in the EU areas of Europe
The main concern with ADAC & Britannia is that according to their written policies they will only attend / recover the caravan if it is attached to the car at the time.Although they both have stated that they would consider a car & van as a unit.the problem is when as in my case the car is deemed a write off/uneconomic repair,it is down to their good will to actually recover the van home.
as it happened in my case Britannia could not/would not attend but fortunately Red Pennant could & did
My car was taken to a main dealer garage & a stupid quotation for repair €7800(new engine)The engine was left in a partial dismantled condition,& could not be taken to another Garage
as the repair was uneconomic Britannia would not bring it or the caravan home. How ever Red Pennant realized the the Quote was excessive & brought the car & caravan home, where repairs were carried out for £1300.
We just phone Britannia continental they give us a quote done this each time we take the van abroard Car Van + belongings all covered and very reasonable cost
I would like to give a BIG vote for Red Pennant, although expensive I KNOW from hard-won experience you get what you pay for.
In 2006 we broke despite having our car fully serviced we broke down twice on the Continent whilst covered by Britannia Rescue Premium service. The first time was a minor electrical fault when out driving solo. After a 3 hour wait we were taken by a BR agent's breakdown truck to a garage. After we had been left there we discovered the garage was about to close for its 2 week's summer hols!!! After another 2 hour wait the car was collected by the same breakdown truck and we were taken by taxi back to the campsite. The car was then repaired relatively quickly.
Two weeks later we broke down on the motorway in Belgium when traveling home towing the c'van. We and c'van were taken to a nearby campsite, caravan handbrake was damaged enroute by breakdown driver forcing down the ratcheted handbrake. I KNEW the car had autobox problems and it was taken to a local franchised garage.
We waited for over a week for the car to be repaired. The garage then said it was just an oil leak and put us back on the road home. The car lasted less than 10 miles before it broke down AGAIN. We and the c'van were returned to the campsite and the car back to the same garage, although I had insisted to BR that I wanted a different garage. We were then told it WAS the gearbox and that the car had to repatriated to the UK. BR provided us with hire cars to get back home, they could not/would not provide us with a hired TOW car.
After numerous delays our own car and c'van were returned to us. The litany of delays and botches are too lengthy to mention but the c'van finally arrived home with £1,100 worth of damage, ie, bumps and dents which had not been present when we left it. BR tried every trick in the book to avoid liability before finally paying up 6 months later.
In 2007 we broke down again in near Rome. That year we were with Red Pennant. They provided us with 2 hire TOW cars so that we could continue with our hols. When we finally arrived near Calais RP sent over a hired RIGHT HAND drive Landrover Disco TOWCAR for our journey home in the UK. The car was repatriated later.
So Red Pennant for me every time. It's not what the insurers SAY that they provide but what they actually provide when the chips are down!!! I KNOW!!

Good Post We always use RP even for are 3 month trips to Spain , the cost is immaterial when you want a good level of cover .
When the chips are down you won't be left in the lurch with RP unlike some of these cheepo breakdown insurance policy's
We started going to Europe with our van 25 years ago and we have always used Red Pennant. I know that it appears to be expensive but try and get reasonably priced medical cover when over 65 that allows you to be away for more than 60 days especially when you both have medical conditions. I could not find a policy which was cheaper than the medical element of RP.
thanks for all the replies and good advice. Sounds like RP have best level of cover. Has anyone got any idea if they do a yearly cover policy to Europen countries or do you have to pay for a policy for each trip. Also, any ideas on cost? I don't mind spending a few quid to get decent cover but i also need good value hehe. I would ask caravan club directly (i am already a member), but typically their web page and phone line is not usable due to the manic booking of next years holidays by the members. But that is another topic all together....

and then you can buy RP online. I did this for our trip last summer as I know exactly what you mean about getting through on the CC's phone lines!!
If I may add to my previous saga. During the last few years since we found our Kia Sorento (b0ught after our 2 bad summer experiences of 2006/07) very reliable we have NOT bought the RP Plus cover.
Although we have had no major incidents since those 2 bad years RP has proved very helpful in sending out a breakdown service in Germany when there was a minor problem with the c'van brakes, finding us a Kia dealer when the headlight bulbs failed and I didn't have a socket long enough to remove the headlights to replace the bulbs with my own spares. When necessary they can set up 3-way conversations, at their expense with others for expert advice as they did when I was concerned the motor mover had done slight damage to the c'van tyres.
Last summer I suffered a minor eye injury whilst on a stopover at Plymouth prior to joining the ferry to Roscoff. RP not only rebooked the ferry several times a and contacted our destination campsite in France but when the injury was not healing as fast as I would have liked actually found me a specialist eye hospital which certainly sorted me out. The level of PERSONAL service was OUTSTANDING with Tric of RP regularly phoning us to see how I was progressing and even checking that everything was okay AFTER we arrived safely in France.
Reading back over this makes us sound like walking disasters but we do often travel a long way and for extended periods abroad and RP meets our needs VERY well.
David beat me to it whilst I was typing my reply. I would, however, respectfully, point out that those are the 2012 prices and so may be slightly higher for 2013. I don't think the 2013 prices are out yet and if I remember rightly one can buy RP at the previous year's prices if one buys it before the new prices are issued, ie, buy 2013 RP cover at 2012 RP prices.
However, the annual increase has not been very much in previous years and so David's post is a reliable indicator.
Many thanks again to all who have replied. Finally got through to RP and for anyone reading but not posting this is what i have been told. Yes you can get a yearly cover from RP, either for the car & van only or including personal cover if you wish. Seems there are 2 levels of car cover but both are very comprehensive. For car & van cover only for the year i was quoted a shade over £190. The cover also allows 'day trips' or longer to the continent without the caravan which is a nice bonus. From the comments posted here it seems to be value if like me you want an 'all eventualities' policy for touring in Europe. I will be treating myself to one years worth of peace of mind with them as soon as the quote appears on my doormat!
Thanks again to all who have helped and posted
