Noticing that a few posters have listed several venues over a span of 6 months or so, I wondered if fuel costs have changed their holiday patterns in any way. For ourselves, now retired, instead of, say four or five separate outings, we tend to opt for a couple of outings of about 6 weeks at a time. It does reduce the places that you can visit in any one season, and you do have to hope for a decent spell of good weather, but the low mpg costs whilst actually towing gives a considerable saving. Do any other caravanners use this option, or are thinking about it?

Well, we still go away a lot, but less towing as we stay longer. Looking at abroad again (France) - didn't go last year because we bought new van. Is it my imagination, or have ferry prices jumped quite a bit? We like Brittany, and towards southwest. First impressions are that Dover-calais via DFDS Seaways and some extra driving distance would be cheapest option. Any different views?
went on a seasonal pitch 2 years ago not just to save on running costs but to save the aggro of towing and setting up and packing up, spend 9 weeks a year on site and love it.
It does save money on towing costs not having to tow but when you become a wrinkly like me every little bit helps.
still do the odd winter trip though. Blackpool and the lakes being the latest
We are intending to carry on as normal. After 40 years of caravanning and in the Autumn of our years never know if it will be the last we are capable. As van is now 3 year old looked at changing but those thousands of pounds will buy a lot of fuel and a new van will not allow me to do anything different.
Try to find a site that has an Asda near it ,fuel as of yesterday 126.7 and 135.7.
I have run my Skoda on there diesel for over 200,000 miles, with no problems or mileage lose, I have tried Esso and Shell but get less mileage with there fuel
My fuel costs have always been hign because I decide to drive a vehicle, which whilst an excellent towcar, is not very economic. Also fuel costs are only one aspect of holidays costs, especially if you travel abroad where you have crossings and insurance to pay for. I think available time is perhaps as an important issue. We generally go to Europe for 8/9 weeks in early summer and 6/7 weeks later on. I am not sure I would like to be constrained from where to go by fuel prices, although as Tentz points out its a lot cheaper in France anyway although places like Germany and Italy its as expensive if not more so.
If i had to restrict my trips because of fuel costs, I would give up as it just means i cant afford to do it anymore.
There again there are other ways of saving money, like do you realy need a new car or will the one you have do, or I am sure I can get another couple of years out my caravan theres nothing wrong with it.
Fuel is getting dearer, but so are site fees. For me my caravan is about going to various places,
But if fuel cost are a rear issue, whynot just stay closer to home, for weekend trips I look at place within an hours drive, which works out at about 50 miles or so. 2 gallons of fuel.
Believe it or not but fuel prices are the same now as they were at the start of the year. At least diesel round here is. They haven't changed much all year, there was a spike where it went into the low 40's but they soon came back down.
I do some part time work for a marquee firm and sometimes tow a trailer for them. This year they decided they would pay me a mileage fee as well as my time towing. It was based on diesel being £1.39.9 a litre and adjusted according to fluctuating prices so I have kept a detailed record of what cost the fuel was for the milage I was doing. It has crept up at our local station 3p in the last week to £1.42.9 but others a short drive away are still £1.39.9 and I saw one a bit further away today at £1.37.9. Still dear enough!
As I need the 4x4 for the farm work I haven't the option of a cheaper car and the caravan is probably the lightest thing it tows, plus being designed for towing it doesn't use much more fuel than solo.
