I have been looking on the site but have been unable to find any topics relating to car cams, maybe I have been looking in the wrong place.
Having read some of the posts on caravan insurance, folk being forced off the road and such topics surely these cameras will become compulsory very soon.
Personally other than the cost it seems that they would be a very useful piece of equipment to have fitted to all caravans as is becoming the case with artics and lorries generally. It certainly would nail any offenders to the wall should the case be serious enough.
Are there many caravaners that have them fitted and surely insurers may give a discount should they be fitted ?

I would think the cost of camera would outweigh any insurance savings offered particularly as photographic evidence of a 'normal' accident could work both for & against you as none of us is perfect & accidents caused for the purposes of fraud are more likely in city traffic which is not really where one tows a caravan most of the time.

I must tow my caravan 3k miles/yr & I can't say I find bad driving by others much of a problem & certainly not worth laying out £100s for cameras. Yes cameras are fitted to large truck/bus fleets but the economics are totally different as other factors are involved that would not apply to private motorists.

The problem of fraudulent claims is being partly addressed by changing the law. If you want to fit one or more cameras its personal choice & as with cctv systems, generally the more you pay the better it will be.

Can't speak for the quality but you can buy these now for under £25. I would be interested in any experiences of what you get for that price.

I think if one was going to get one at all it would need to be a good one, generally over £100. Possibly a good idea for van drivers delivering in urban areas & of course taxi drivers or anybody who spends every working day on the road, but less worth it for a private motorist.

I take your point Tentz that it could well work against us as well as for us but my thoughts would be that if I have a camera fitted I would be taking even more care than I already do especially if it applied to all drivers who had them fitted. The fitting of cameras in cars would inevitably cause the accident rate to plummet making driving for all road users safer and surely that cannot be a bad thing especially when hauling a caravan ?
I have fit CCTV cameras for surveillance work before and know their value only too well, they have come along way over the past 10 years or so. They are really quite cheap and range from the £20's upwards but the best and most comprehensive I have seen is the Roadhawk, think it is around the £200 mark.

millermicm the links above by alpiner show some cheap cameras and you can see from them the afforded quality, they I believe come from Hong Kong and are available on eBay. Some of the cheap cameras that I have seen are OK but it is the same old story, you inevitably get what you pay for.

We must have more than out fair share of lousy drivers on the roads in the North of England, some horrendous driving in these parts.
Check this little lot out all on the A69 in the space of 6 months and roughly within 20 miles of one another and one of the reasons I am so for statutory fitting of car cameras. Sick and tired of the carnage.

1. 3 June 2012 - Man who died in car crash on A69 near Ovingham named.
2. 30 Jul 2012 – A Brampton man has died in hospital a week after being involved in a car ... on the A69
3. 25 Oct 2012 – A FORMER teacher at Haydon Bridge High School was killed near Haltwhistle, was hit by a car travelling on the A69
4. 5 December 2012 - A crash between a car and a train that left a child in a critical condition may have been caused by a mystery driver on wrong side of the road heading head on towards the victim forcing her to swerve into the path of the train.Saturday.
5. 10 December 2012 - POLICE have named a woman who died in a three-vehicle crash on the A69 between Hexham and Haydon Bridge.

If your considering a dash cam there are only really two worth considering. The Blackview or Roadhawk. Dont bother with any of the cheap ones on ebay etc at about 20-25 quid as they are practicly useless due to their poor picture qauilty like reading a numberplate etc, you cant! also their night vision is next to useless too as the LED's just reflect back from the windscreen. There are plenty of video's on Youtube of the Roadhawk or Blackview cams in action. We have them across our fleet of trucks at work, at 200 quid each, a worthwhile investment.

They also have GPS logging.

Exactly my thoughts Gary H and I'll bet things are a lot easier to prove with them fitted plus the drivers surely will be more aware of their own driving. I have seen the videos that you refer to on You Tube, they are excellent and it is easy to see exactly why these cameras should be beneficial to all road users. The one I best remember is where that idiot drove across the front of the lorry on a dual carriageway, to get to a slip road, the lorry ended up on its side and as was said in the footage, it could clearly be seen that the lorry driver was not to blame. I wonder what would have been the outcome without that footage ? I just do not understand why more folk are opposed to having them fitted. One day they will have no option it will be compulsory, I'd put my shirt on that.
I have not got a lot of cash to throw around but an investment on one of those cameras at £200 is a certainty,

p.s very useful information, thanks.

I am recently retired after over 40yrs of HGV driving & I still do plenty of mileage in my car both solo & caravan towing in the warmer months & I simply do not see these incidents of bad driving except very infrequently.

I suppose with truck driving though one does develop a sense of forward observation that does allow one to spot the potential bad drivers & adjust one's own driving to suit. Certainly the earlier you spot a potential accident situation the more time you have to act accordingly to prevent it developing into an actual accident.

One's own driving style can of course prevent other motorists bad driving & lack of observation impinging into one's own road space. An example of this is if one anticipates stopping distances at junctions/traffic lights & slows down gently rather than slamming on one's brakes at last moment as so many do, one is less lightly to get rammed from behind & also less lightly to become a victim of insurance fraudsters who might cut in front of you in the hope you will hit them.

Okay, so Tentz used the word "one" quite a few times.  It did not detract from the information included in the post.  This is not an English exam but a means of interchanging ideas.

The points raised are very valid and, as a retired Police traffic officer, I can confirm that a major part of our training required forward observation and adopting a 'hangback' position to avoid getting into dangerous situations.  It has served me well over the years.

Exactly tentz you have said it as it is. The unfortunate thing being that you cannot train the mind of an idiot, those who drive way too close, too fast and have the retarded habit of continually driving on the wrong side of the white line, especially whilst coming round blind bends. Then there are the clowns who continually use phones and other gadgets whilst driving, won't go there, makes my blood boil.
Professional drivers such as long distance, ambulance and indeed the police invariably have seen far more than casual drivers ever will.
However prediction of which way the marbles will roll inside the head of some of these inept dangerous drivers is not something that other road users can control and often predict.
The number of deaths on the roads is something that no one seems too bothered about in the government after all we are driving on roads that were created many years ago when the volume of traffic was merely a fraction of what it is today.
The government seem to accept the death toll on our roads in a blasé and casual manner. This comment can be justified by the fact that they are prepared to spend billions on a totally unnecessary new rail system when indeed the road system of the UK is creaking at the seams, by such inaction can they not be deemed complicit in the 1,901 deaths on UK roads during 2011, at least that is my take on the situation ?
