Are you referring to fixed motor movers,or the type that tow from the hitch??
Fixed motor movers such as the Powrtouch actually drive the wheels & work very well on all surfaces, even better than your car.I have often used the mover to get off a muddy pitch that the car had trouble with.
The type of mover that hitches to the caravan hitch,& pulls/pushes the caravan are only any good on level hard surfaces, whether they are fitted with all terrain tyres or not,

Mine work equally well on gravel and grass I used them to move my unit off a really soggy pitch last July with no problems.

Agree. That's what they are for!
Better with a pneumatic tyre on the jockey wheel.

Have only once had a problem on my twin axle when the driving wheel sunk in soft sand leaving the caravan supported on the other wheel and the driven wheel spinning in mid-air
Otherwise they are very good on all surfaces

Summer holiday in cornwall the caravan sank upto the depth of the side of the tyres in the soft grass.
I did think it would be stuck. But no problem at all.
Purpleline mover, Wound the rollers on and drove it up onto the road no issues.
It really is the best thing we have bought. Expensive but well worth it.
Hitch types probably wouldnt have budged it.

We stay in a cul de sac which is a single lane so also have a tight turn into our chipped drive which has a slight incline and the motor mover is invaluable as there is no chance of using the car to reverse the van.

Our Powrmover has only not helped once in the many years of good service we have had from it. That was on a day when we tried to get van off waterlogged field (grass and lots of mud) which meant powrmover just span caravan wheels in the mud. Just about hopeless. But with 4wd car and a bit of physical man-handling of van to get it on the cars tow ball we crept off the site in low range without too much trouble. Gravel and grass is no worries BUT - swamp with grass on defeated it - thank heavens for the 4wd!!
------------- Why am i doing this instead of camping??!!

Maybe a mix of the tyres also? Or just lucky.
They guy on the pitch next to us said that his mover wouldnt have done that.
Maybe the slight forward to make a ramp than back an inch or so then forward again helped?
Ones its moving dont stop.
For some odd reason i do find that holding the forward left and right buttons makes it pull straight.
Where just pushing the single forward button it goes off at a slight angle.
Odd one that.
