Hello, Help wanting to change car to a citreon grand c4 Picasso diesel 1.6 which dealer says has a kerbweight of 1605kg. We have a 2005 bailey pageant Provence single axle which brochure says has a mtplm of 1420 kg. can anyone clarify if this car would be ok. I have been on various web pages with differing advice that I am now confused!

That car will not tow that weight i was told only 1180kg is max you need to look at a 2.0 .

Wud agree with philip,also will find it very underpowered.You will need a 2.0 turbo diesel

These figures for both vehicles below are based on a 2009 model with a manual gearbox.

1.6 diesel kerbweight = 1530 kgs. / maximum towing weight (braked trailer) = 1180 kgs.

2.0 diesel kerbweight = 1568 / maximum towing weight (braked trailer) = 1500 kgs.

It appears that the dealer has his figures completely wrong and is just trying to generate a sale, however the 1.6 cc diesel is definitely inadequate for your towing needs. If you calculate an 85% match with an MTPLM of 1420 kgs. then you actually need a towing vehicle with a kerbweight of approx. 1670 kgs.

It is unwise to take towing advice from a car dealer. The op needs to consult manufacturer literature for any car he is considering & work out figure for himself.

From citroen brochure for new Grand Picasso the 1.6 HDi has a mass in service of 1690kgs and max towing weight of 1180 kgs, NW 60 kgs

2ltr HDi has mass in service of 1770 kgs and max tow weight of 1400 kgs and NW of 70 kgs

I was thinking of getting the Grand Picasso, but I'd have needed the 2.0 and there aren't many about. Also many people on this forum have reported problems towing and reversing with the semi auto gear box. Which would mean me finding a manual and there even fewer of them.

After a lot of research I've now pretty decided on the manual version of the KIA Carens 2.0 CRDI GS [7 Seater].

Its not just the cars kerbweight thats the issue. As above the 1.6 ust happens to have a low max towing limit.

So you want so for the recommended 85% match you want something with a kerbweight of 1700kg.
Obviously this will mostly mean 4x4's and people carrier type vehicles. A couple of large estates maybe.

So you may need to compromise on that. But the vehicles max towing limit is the big issue.

Check the cars V5C look at the kerbweight and max tow.

You want something with a kerbweight and max tow above 1500kg. at a MINIMUM.

Then it gets even more confusing.

The figures for my car say it can weigh 2100kg fully loaded and tow 1800kg.

But it cannot do both at the same time. The cars fully loaded weight and max tow weight is about 300kg less than the gross train weight figure.

All very confusing if you dont have all thee figures.
