Not sure what model it was but one of the caravan magazines ran an article on a diesel tuning box towards the end of last year.  I think their opinion was that it was OK. Personally I don't do enough miles to consider one as I don't think I would get the cost of it back.

this is only a personal opinion but when you take into account that motor manufacturers spend millions of pounds on engine development , emission control etc etc, so as to get their vehicles to run efficiently and economically with longer service intervals ,is it really likely that these little 'go faster' boxe's (developed and produced at a fraction of the cost ) are really worth fitting ?

lots of my mates have fitted these ' magic' tuning boxes at some expense, only to have them removed at a later date due to the facyt they have done more harm than good, apart from the fact that they just might invalidate your insurance if you were to fit one, thereby altering the performance of your vehicle, without informing your cover provider

All tuning boxes do fool the ecu into increasing rail pressure to deliver more fuel which gives the power increase. A remap is probably a better idea.

check with your insurance first as some do not like chip modifications.if pulling a caravan imho it would be a waste of money.

Your VX warranty may well be compromised , why would you even want to tinker with a new car defies logic

As others are saying, the manufacturers know best when it comes to setting up the car. I would never buy anything like this. If you need more power, get a bigger car.

Go for a remap, far better ,we had a terrano done wow what a difference the turbo comes in much lower down the rev range and ore torque, far better when towing and the engine is a lot smoother, the only trade off is a lower top speed but you can only tow at 60 mph , but some companys will ask what you want from a remap ,ecconomy or power most manufacturers use a form of remap,ie ford transits come with 85 bhp,115 & 140. It's the same engine just remapped to give more power

I see you have an Auto, have you considered that the Auto box gear changes are controlled from the engine input data.If the box is not changing at the optimum you probably will find you have gained nothing.

One does wonder if it is just marketing when car manufacturers offer same models with versions of the same diesel engine in different power outputs. The 140bhp version might cost £1500 more than the 120bhp version but is it just a different chip & the actual manufacturing costs are no greater for the more powerful version?

There is usually an awful lot more to it than a different 10pence chip.
VW/Audis for instance have differences in injectors and different turbos, so sticking a cheap tuning box on won't turn a low powered version into a higher powered one. Having said that, the price differences are usually disproportionate as the cheaper one will still have injectors and turbos anyway. The higher up the spec list you go, the bigger their profit margin.

A proper re-map is worth a look if the OP really needs more go, but I'd only stick a cheap box on a car worth the same as the box. Manufacturers spend billions developing their vehicles, and someone comes along with a plastic box containing 50pence worth of resistors that shows them how it should be done? Yeah, right.

Might as well drain the sump and fill it with snake oil at he same time.

not really snake oil is it, it actually does increase the power.
OK, it doesn't necessarily go about it the best way, by increasing the rail pressure, so you get more fuel more fuel=more power. newer engines would go better with other parameters being adjusted as well.
I had one for my Sedona, with a switch so it could be switched on or off. my insurers weren't bothered, and it made a huge difference when towing, less gear changes, better acceleration.
A remap will also increase the rail pressure, and also tweak the injector opening times, and possibly up the boost pressure.
After all, on a deisel, theres not much else to tune, amount of fuel, when fuel is injected & more air (so you can use that extra fuel) is about it.

For more info look at TDi sport here http://www.tdisport.com/

A box will cost between £50-£120 and will just fool the fuel system. A full remap can be had for as little as £200 with a dyno readout. With a remap there is no visual evidence of having been tampered. The tuner should adjust ALL the parameters to give a smooth ride and better torque curve. If you use the extra power by booting it all the time you will see extra black smoke but this is normal.

Remember that most of the cheap tuning boxes just up the fuel pressure.

Turn them up too high and the car will default into limp mode. The risk is the ecu no longer knows what the pressure is.

They can claim to be mini super computers but they are just a resistor in a posh box. Remember the cooker knobs on ebay. Similar thing.

You can achieve the same results with a £1 worth of resistors.

Grampian 91 is right on the money. I have my own tuning company and tow a caravan myself. I used to sell the odd tuning box now and again but soon ran into problems. They are so generic in how they work they seem great on some vehicles and nothing but problems on others. So much so we stopped selling them.

If you can get a remap. It can written for your vehicle to a specification you require and adjust all sorts of areas. Boost pressure, pressure limiters, torque limiters, fuel duration, fuel pressure and the list goes on........and on!

If anyone would like any info on remapping and how it works or in's and out's give me a shout.

Oh my someone agrees with me Shame your biased though

I sl*g these off on a certain board and someone seems to read the posts i make. They claim to be mini computers yet operate with no power. Some now come with a power LED and extra wire.
Of course it only operates the LED. Still does nothing.

I am one step ahead though..

Same box for every car they make but with a different plug.

Yet these super duper mini computers with an LED still put the car into limp mode.
Why can it not work this out for itself?
