Having just been informed that it is not a legal requirement to have reverse lights on caravans, and not wishing to hijack the thread in question......

May I ask, how are caravanner's supposed to inform general traffic (and pedestrians, for that matter) that they are attempting to reverse on a public highway? EG, because they have mistakenly turned into a cul-de-sac.
It seems they must inform others when they intend to take a left or right turn, and of course, when slowing down and/or stopping.

When reversing, do they have to have a banksman? (I doubt that, of course) Or do they just think, sod it.... no choice.... here goes!!

Is it a case that while it's not a legal requirement, most do actually have them (as common sense would say it's a good idea).

I admit that I cannot recall ever being faced with an on-coming caravan in reverse mode, but surely it can, and does, happen?

As a fellow (non-towing) road user, (who has obviously taken little notice of the rear ends of caravans to date! ) I'd be very interested with the views of the experts (that's you lot, btw!) :-)

I must add, this is far from me having a dig at caravanner's..... but it may become a dig at what is already coming across as a rather silly, and possibly dangerous, law. (Or rather, lack of a sensible law!). Although your replies may soon alter my outlook!

Many thanks.

Mucker

Hazard flashers are usually effective - brighter and easier to notice than reversing lights in any case, and visible to traffic coming the other way. How legal this is I'm not sure, but presumably it's covered by the use of hazard flashers to draw attention to an obstruction, which a reversing trailer/caravan may well be!

I agree with you, Mucker, and in the days when it was rare for them to be fitted as standard have always retro-fitted them.

It is relatively easy to do and usually only requires the manufacturer of some form of bracket to fit them to the underside of the floor to avoid screwing into the outershell of the caravan.

It's much easier reversing down the driveway with them

Reversing lights are to allow the driver to see where he is reversing, hazard flashers should still be used while reversing anyway. It is not a defence in case of an accident while reversing to say you did not have anybody to supervise your reversing manoeuver, it remains the driver's responsibility to ensure safe reversing.

You should not be reversing into approaching traffic ,caravan attached or not, reverse lights are to make it easier to see where you are reversing not to warn others that you are. It is an offence to show a white light at the rear of your vehicle to traffic behind you. You should wait until any traffic has passed and then continue your manouvre. This includes three point turns. ( With or without the caravan) Hazard lights should not be used on moving vehicles, forwards or backwards. They are to warn drivers of stationary vehicles in the traffic flow, eg while you are waiting to reverse. Using them while moving can be misleading to drivers judging the distance to the believed stationary vehicle, particularly in the dark. At least those were the guidelines in the Highway code and what my driving instructor taught me when I took my test.

i use my hazard lights if i need to reverse in a tight and resticted road.there are times any caravanner will be in the position of not being able to get through and need to reverse.tend to think reverse lights are ignored anyway a bleaper would be better.

Unfortunately I think that Bleepers are illegal unless you are over 7.5 tonnes.  Perhaps that's a good thing though.  Could be a bit of a nuisance on a camp site.

Reversing bleepers are not illegal for vehicles under 7.5 tonnes, I  drive a 16 seat merc sprinter (4.5 tonnes) and it is fitted with a reversing bleeper. However all the drivers of these and other Mini buses are advised/told to switch it off between the hours of 11.00 pm and 07.30 am.

Sorry amara 520.  You are partially right and I am wrong !!  The weight limit has been reduced to 2 tonnes ( It used to be 7.5 ) but it doesn't apply to buses.  For the full regulation have a look at Road Vehicle ( Construction & Use ) Regulation 99

not quite correct
"You MUST NOT use hazard warning lights while driving or being towed unless you are on a motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway and you need to warn drivers behind you of a hazard or obstruction ahead. Only use them for long enough to ensure that your warning has been observed."

However, reversing lights are no more required on cars than they are on caravans, they are not even part of the MOT fitted or not.

reversing lights ARE able to be used when vehicles are approaching
highway code page as the signal your INTENTIONS.

my caravan doesnt have reversing lights, nor do I intend to fit them, I use my hazzards, rightly or wrongly, and kick the wife out if required.

How many of us use our headlamp flash incorrectly to flash other cars through, we are not supposed to do that either,
