Having just been informed that it is not a legal requirement to have reverse lights on caravans, and not wishing to hijack the thread in question......
May I ask, how are caravanner's supposed to inform general traffic (and pedestrians, for that matter) that they are attempting to reverse on a public highway? EG, because they have mistakenly turned into a cul-de-sac.
It seems they must inform others when they intend to take a left or right turn, and of course, when slowing down and/or stopping.
When reversing, do they have to have a banksman? (I doubt that, of course) Or do they just think, sod it.... no choice.... here goes!!
Is it a case that while it's not a legal requirement, most do actually have them (as common sense would say it's a good idea).
I admit that I cannot recall ever being faced with an on-coming caravan in reverse mode, but surely it can, and does, happen?
As a fellow (non-towing) road user, (who has obviously taken little notice of the rear ends of caravans to date! ) I'd be very interested with the views of the experts (that's you lot, btw!) :-)
I must add, this is far from me having a dig at caravanner's..... but it may become a dig at what is already coming across as a rather silly, and possibly dangerous, law. (Or rather, lack of a sensible law!). Although your replies may soon alter my outlook!
Many thanks.
Mucker

not quite correct
"You MUST NOT use hazard warning lights while driving or being towed unless you are on a motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway and you need to warn drivers behind you of a hazard or obstruction ahead. Only use them for long enough to ensure that your warning has been observed."
However, reversing lights are no more required on cars than they are on caravans, they are not even part of the MOT fitted or not.
reversing lights ARE able to be used when vehicles are approaching
highway code page as the signal your INTENTIONS.
my caravan doesnt have reversing lights, nor do I intend to fit them, I use my hazzards, rightly or wrongly, and kick the wife out if required.
How many of us use our headlamp flash incorrectly to flash other cars through, we are not supposed to do that either,
