Hello everyone,

I'm new to posting but have lurked for a while, and hoping for some sage advice.

I'm taking the plunge and planning on upgrading from canvas to caravan. Unfortunately my budget is limited, so I have to live with my current car - a 2008 Toyota Verso 1.8 petrol (manual). I'm already aware of the limited towing weight (1300 kg and 52kg nose) and have found some nice looking 4 berth vans with an MLTPM below that.

My question is more a trawl for opinions - is the car going to tow well? Does anyone have any experience of this combination? There'll be a family of four in the car and (possibly) a roofbox. Will this be too heavy, windy, etc.?

Many thanks in advance!

To what I can find it looks like this specific vehicle has 129 BHP with 125 Lbs./ft. engine torque to which I would imagine that you would be struggling on standing starts and hill climbs with a caravan in tow. I used to have a 1.6 diesel with 109 BHP but had 177 Lbs./ft. torque (which is more relevant for towing) and even struggled with this low torque. The vehicle's 52 kgs. towball weight allowance is quite low actually so you may struggle to get the caravan noseweight down although it probably can be done by keeping the hot water tank empty, using lightweight gas cylinders or even keeping the leisure battery in the rear of the car when towing. Regarding a roofbox it will however cause a certain amount of drag but it depends what items you put in there as the heavier the car the more the engine and gearbox is going to struggle carrying the extra load.

With only 52kg noseweight i would not be happy towing anything over 800kg or so.

I find loading my van to bring the limit upto 75kg really helps with the stability.

Dropping it down to 65kg really shows. And my vans only 1150kg gross laden.

Hi both,

Belated thanks for replying. We've decided that we're better off going for a larger diesel estate, so thanks for the advice!

Cheers,

M
