I have never owned a 4x4 so I'm not commenting from experience but have learned several facts by reading posts on here. People who have a 4x4 with the spare wheel attached to the rear side opening door do sometimes have a problem regarding hitching up but according to previous threads the problem is simply solved by the use an Al-ko adapted detachable handle for this purpose. Hope this helps.

Seems to be an issue with the door coming down quite low so a towball has to interfere with door opening in order for it to be high enough for a legal height. Detachable swan-neck towball seems to be the solution.

Hi kaz burty, we also have just bought a rav 4 to tow our pegasus verona.Only towed once but no problems at all,we have a fixed towbar with a bumper protector on which clears the botton of the door by about half an inch but the towball is easily cleared and at the correct height.Cannot comment on the spare wheel holder as ours doesn,t have one

Hope this helps John.

I feel you have not read my post in the content i meant.I was asking a question !I was wondering if you had fitted an after market tow bar as they might differ from the factory fitted.I have also found that some vans have a shorter "A" frame than others and this might also be the Op problem after all like you said just giving a helping hand.

We have a 2003 rav, spare wheel on the rear door, I fitted a fixed Witter towbar, no problem opening the door unhitched, about 20mm clearance, but only opens slightly when hitched, enough to be able to put in/take out small items (it's never bothered us) I just did a bit of homework prior to purchasing the Witter, ps we tow a 2006 Abbey Aventura 318
