Hi

Does anybody tow with a Mitsubishi 2.4 automatic Outlander 2004 model (petrol) As i am thinking of changing my towcar, these seem a lot of car for very little money. But there may be a reason for this. Any comments would be appreciated.

My father had one of these running on LPG.   Very thirsty, quite a harsh ride, and not a great deal of boot space for this type of vehicle. Ugly too! Tyres were expensive as they were a strange size, and hard to get hold of.

Less than 30mpg average for the petrol and closer to 20 on LPG according to the figures.

So not a huge saving.. £260/£270 a year tax?

But buy a 2006/2007 one and that jumps to £460 a year..

Depends if your happy with the 2.4 Auto, Or would you prefer a 2.4 Auto, Or even the 2.4 Auto.

Petrol or LPg options though. But does LPG really drop 8mpg average over petrol?

LPG prices have crept up a bit so the huge savings have reduced a bit.

72p litre near me when the fuel was 127.9. When the fuel shot up to over £1.10 a litre i was paying about 45p a litre for LPG.

Petrol....? Will there even be enough torque?

I think you'll really hammer your mpg figures when towing reguardless of engine size etc...

Cheap and easy to get hold of 'for a reason'!

Did not realize that the fuel consumption would be less (mpg) on lpg to petrol. As i do not use this car on a daily basis the mpg is not a big issue. As my current tow car has only done 3k between MOT's . thank for your comments.

Wouldbe nice to hear from somebody that owns and tows with one as somebody mentioned the torque as it is a petrol engine.

Its an automatic with a torque converter. Unless your towing a stately home its got plenty.

2.4L engine with almost 160ft/lbs of torque. Add in the auto gearbox with lower gearing because top speed is under 120mph.

It will pull fine. Max tow of 1500kg anyway. But thats a fair % of the unladen kerbweight. So ideally 1300kg or less.

Its not a super high geared machine that needs to hit 150mph.

Generally LPG gives less to the gallon than petrol, But that seems a HUGE drop. Much more than i would have expected. 5 mpg yes but closer to 10mpg??

I had one of these, nice car drives well. It tows fine, we had a Bailey Pageant Vendee. Service intervals were 12,000 miles.

However, I got rid quick. Petrol consumption was awful. Usual town driving was 24-28. Even on a long run it was difficult to get 30. Towing, it was down to less than 20mpg.

Incidentally they stopped the LPG variant after just a year, there were major problems with the car running well in both LPG and petrol modes.

My current Mitsu will deliver 37-38mpg towing, and 50+ on a long run.
