We are arriving in UK from NZ at beginning of June and plan to travel around for 2 months. We have purchased a caravan already which we intend to take back to NZ however we need to find a suitable hire vehicle that will tow our caravan while we are in the UK.
Any suggestions on options would be much appreciated.

4x4 type vehicles and commercials are widely available for hire and would do the job. To find a standard car with tow bar would probably be difficult if not impossible. Many of the 4x4s will be full 4/5 seaters.

Enjoy your stay.

Thank you for your responses. I have trawled the net and found a few hire operators who can provide Range Rover type vehicles. The cost is about £3000 for the two months. The caravan is about 1200kg and is able to be towed by a Toyota Rav4 or similar, even a reasonable size car. I am hoping that a member knows of a rental co that provides such a vehicle with tow bar. I realise it might not be possible and if so we'll settle for a large 4x4.

Sorry to be negative but do you mean New Zealand don't you have Caravans in NZ, you can hire Caravans and Motorhomes in the UK.

Hi Pete,
We do have caravans in New Zealand. They are much more expensive than in the uk. Probably because we have a very limited market. Many caravans are now imported from the uk. We will purchase, use to tour around and then take it home. If nothing else two months in a caravan touring the uk should be fun.

Maybe buy a car and resell it? But insurance maybe rather pricey for 2 months.

Is it cost effective taking it back? Ive seen the NZ customs going over some vehicles that had come from a museum for some display and they had to get jetwashed to remove all traces of dirt.

Can't see a caravan standing upto that.

Not a lot og options for cars with a towbar though.

Nissan Navara crewcabs and similar had towbars fitted last time i enquired. Maybe cheaper.

When you say about 1200kg, Is that the full laden weight or the unladen weight?   Or even the MIRO Mass In Running Order)?

What caravan is it? Make/Model/Year? Single or twin axle?

you would be far better spending the £3000 + on a used car and sell it before you go home

Export of used UK caravans to NZ is an established practise, I'm sure the op knows what he is doing & is not seeking advice relating to that.

As for the car, if he can hire a modern vehicle for £3k for 2months then this is probably his best option, he won't have to find insurance, it will be a reliable modern vehicle & any mechanical or tyre problems will be the hirer's to sort out.

The alternative which is to locate, purchase & insure a suitable vehicle with towbar & sell again afterwards in the space of 2months sounds not feasible for anybody not familiar with the UK & who just wants to enjoy a holiday here.

Hi all,

Tentz has got it right. No problem importing caravans into NZ. It happens every day. We have looked at buying a car but insurance kills it so we end up with the hire option and there is no question that we can hire a nice late model 4x4 Range Rover. My interest is in seeing whether any members are aware of hire operators who hire a 2 litre or 2.5 litre car or 4x4 as a tow vehicle as if so I expect it will be cheaper than a Discovery . The van is an Abbey Vogue 415GTS.

It might help if you can give details of area of country where you want to hire vehicle from in case anybody has specific local knowledge.

We arrive in London and will travel down to Bournemouth to pick up our caravan.
To amara 520. I'll try those if I haven't already. My interest is if anyone knows of a second tier hire operator who hires tow vehicles. It may be that they don't exist in which case we'll have to settle for the more expensive option of a large 4x4 or pickup.

Thanks for all the suggestions

The second link that Amara shows has Freelander's with a 2.2 litre diesel at £1195 for 4 weeks, it may be worth looking into.

it may be worth emailing or calling some of the companys, they may do it cheaper than their online rate for an extended hire.

A Mondeo would be more suitable, but finding a hire company that is willing to have a tow bar fitted, may be difficult.
I am sure that there are "back street" hirers that do not use brand new vehicles and these may be the better option.
