Hi all

I'm currently looking for a new (to me!) tow car. I have seen a Peugeot 807 2.0 HDI which looks nice but I haven't a clue what they are like to tow with, or what common problems to look out for.

Alternatively, does anyone have any suggestions... my budget is between £5000 and £7000.

Thanks!

Rachel

Any car this size is expensive to repair so you really need a full main dealer service history from new. The 2.0hdi's are good engine but I think this car & the Citroen & Fiat equivalents had a problem with premature cambelt failure(& extensive engine damage obvs.) due to rainwater running into cambelt housing. I think this was sorted out at manufacturer expense but you need to see evidence of cambelt change & modification on these cars at around 50k miles rather than the original 100k mile/10yr interval. Although 07reg onwards cars should be ok apparently. read this

Most will start sl*gging French cars etc & say buy a Galaxy but I suggest you check replacement price of Galaxy dual mass flywheel & also exhaust systems, both which can fail at under 60k miles.

Thanks Tentz! That's really helpful, just need to check the bhp and torque it has now.

I WAS looking at the Galaxy but am struggling to find one in my budget with a reasonable mileage. The cambelt failed on my previous car so I'm understandably a bit over sensitive about the issue now!

Regards

Rachel

I picked my new motor yesterday after looking all over the place for the past month. We picked a Peugeot 407SW Estate with a 2.0l HDi engine and 65k on the clock. Just over £6000 for an 09reg, so well pleased. We also looked at Jag x types, Kia Carens and Citroen C8's & C5's and a Galaxy. This car will tow up to 1500kgs. My current C4 tows our van easily (about 1200kg's) and it's only a 1.6HDi. We collect on Thursday. Cam belts on the 2.0l are now "long life" and are scheduled at 150k.

Good hunting.

Be aware the 2.0 Hdi   807s have a low GTW (Gross Train Weight) 3875kg -3945 kg depending on the model which if your considering a heavier van in the future may limit your choice .
Although the 2.0 litre HDI 807s have a towing capability of up to 1850kg if you loaded the car up to its maximum weight limit you would have to be careful not to exceed the GTW .
In simple terms if the car is fully loaded your towing limit is reduced
