Don't know which 300tdi you have. They weigh in between 2055kg & 2588kg according to "parkers"+788kg for the van. you may be ok or you may not.
Put it on a weighbridge with a normal loading.
I read that as you don;t need to take the test either way as 2588+788 < 3500kg
I too passed my test after the cut off date and know that my fathers discovery is the biggest car i can tow my van with as his is 2055kg.
if in doubt, call the DVLA, but in my opinion as long as the weights are above you are fine.
https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car/driving-licence-rules-and-what-you-can-tow <-- go through this link and you will find that as long as your total outfit wieghs less than 3500kg and your trailer weighs less than yoru car you are fine.

Surely this works off Maximum Authorised Mass of towcar and trailer.
It doesn't matter what it does weigh, it's what it can weigh.

The above link suggests you can now tow car/caravan of up to 3.5tonnes in weight on post '97 licence which one might take as actual weight of combo on weighbridge rather than as previously reckoned to be combined Mam of car/caravan. The link is up to date.
Useful Gov website link here. It now appears ok to tow any car/caravan that goes on a weighbridge at less than 3.5tonnes on just B licence provided trailer is lighter than car. Googling around the Gov website about all this has been much simplified with these easy to understand pages.

looks from that they have changed ruling which seems more sensible.
Following on from those links one can find more ambiguity here. It states max trailer length 7mtres towed by car under 3.5t Mam whereas before it stated on Gov website that you could go to 7mtres caravan body length, ie not including drawbar. I cannot find the old Gov webpages that gave more detailed info.
The new gov web pages are very much in plain English & explain it very clearly & are easier to understand. The problem appears that they have changed the rules slightly & it now appears, for example a Disco owner can tow a reasonably large caravan without an E part of licence but many large touring caravans cannot now be legally towed as they are over 7mtres overall length.
Whether these are errors & the 'old rules' do still apply remains to be seen.
cheers for the inputs fellow caravaners, it all seems like one big mess cos one bit of into from dvla says yes that other bits make it out that i cant, but from what i can understand of it all, aslong as my car + caravan and occupents and luggage etc dont exceed 3.5tonne i should be legal ? as im the sure my disco is more than fit for pulling a caravan of that size? n mines the discovery 300tdi es, from memory with out fishing for the log book im sure the weight is 2177kg ish
