Hi all
I need your advice please on tyre selection. I have a 2.5 kia sorento with 18" wheels and I'm planning on getting a caravan later on this year. My tyres are nearly down to the limit so I need 4 new tyres. What tyre would you recommend for this 4x4. I've been told to look at the general grabber AT or GT tyre. My tyres size is 255/55/18.
Cheers
Dave.
Used to have 16" Grabber AT's on my last 4X4, all in all a pretty decent tyre.
When I changed my motor I have ended up putting Yokohama's on it(18")now they are a really good tyre. I checked your size on Tesco Tyres and there is £10 a tyre difference between General and Yokohama, personally I would go for Yokohama.
One brand I would never recommend for a 4X4 is Accelera

For me the only thing to look for is that the tyre has been submitted to the American Uniform Tire Quality Grading System (UTQG). American consumer info is often more informative than most. Not all tyres have these markings, including some so called 'premium' brands.
UTQG is not a requirement in Europe, it is imperfect, but it is the only reasonably quantifiable guide to tyre performance there is. It measures three things: Treadwear; is a number, the higher the number, the higher wearing the tyre will be. Traction; a letter indicateing grip level. Temperature: a letter indicating how good a tyre is at dissipating heat.
I have been aware of UTQG for at least 25 years and have always bought, so called 'budget' tyres, as long as they posses a good UTQG rating and have never had a problem.
I paid the extra and had Michelin Lattitude on my CR-v I wont bother with them again ! Had Continental on before and will go back to those next time if they still do them.

Hi I think that was the AT2 but the new one are just AT.
Yes it is the AT2 that is being discontinued. I rang for some tyres Thursday. Grabber AT at $105 or BF Goodrich AT at $117. I would pay the extra. (sorry no pound sign just $ on i mac! )
