We currently have an elderly audi A4 which we use for towing, and a C4 Grand Picasso which is lovely but can't tow anything at all. Although the Audi is a good low mileage car, its kerbweight of 1395 is quite restrictive in terms of what caravan we can pull, so we are pondering trading both in and getting two replacement cars. The budget would not be great, the Audi is maybe worth £2.5k, the Citroen maybe £7k tops and we can dig down the back of the sofa and perhaps put another thousand or so to it (not a vast sum to buy two cars, I know!).

So, if we were starting to look for a tow car for around £7-8,000, what would you suggest we look at to give
1.the best mpg (both towing and not)
+ 2. widest range of vans we could tow
+ 3.lowest service costs
+ 4. greatest reliability
+ 5. Comfortably fitting an adult and two child seats in the back?

On my vague shortlist is the SMax, the Mondeo, Kia Sorrento and Honda CRV ...Would welcome more suggestions and thoughts

white rose you have the same problem as me, i'm looking for an S-Max but finding one in  my budget with the right ages and mileage is proving hard the main factor there is the an adult and 2 kids in the back, I've not found any other car than the s-max that can do this and tow the weights

S-Max tempted but how much??

I can buy 2 Mondeo's for that.

2 immaculate latest model MK3 Mondeo's Petrol or diesel, Saloon/Hatch/Estate.

2007 models with fairly high miles for £2000 ish. Thats my choice over a newer MK4.

Buy one thats been looked after and not run to 11,999 miles between services. Find one serviced at half that and it will last for many years to come.

I agree on the cost, Grampian, but I'm not sure if you can fit two child seats and an adult in the rear seats of a Mondy (as RobDawn says, this isn't an easy requirement to match - the Audi doesn't)- and I do like the higher driving position of an SMax

In the back of a Mondeo you can't fit a small child and 2 car seats. Hence the reason im looking for an smax

That must be down to the seat design.

I can easily fit between 2 child seats in my sisters 2002 hatchback.

Im not the slimmest person either.

I think it makes a difference which Stage of car seat, as much as anything else - its far easier to fit between two booster seats than it is to fit between a rear facing and a stage 2 seat, for example. My mother in law is tiny, but could only fit between our rear seats if she had no desire to breathe in for the whole journey!

Consider the Hyundai Santa Fe as well. Same underneath as the Kia Sorrento.
Hyundai own Kia (have done for some years)and are the 4th largest car manufacturer in the world!
Santa Fe is very capable towcar. 2.2d turbo. Mine is the two wheel drive version and copes really well with 1450kg.
Bought it week before christmas 2010 at auction Belle Vue Manchester for £8,300. About £2k less than they were selling for in the dealers at the time and only 60k miles.

We have a KX2 Sorento, 2,2 diesel. AWD(2012)

It drives very well and has more than enough power (194 bhp and over 300lb/ft of torque). It has the same running gear as the Santa Fe. Last week it did 38mpg on a run to Dorset, not driven slowly!

It tows well too.Our model came out in 2010, so I am not sure if you will get one in your budget, but Santa Fe has been out longer I think.

The pre 2010 Sorento is a 2.dTD but is heavier and not as economical, but is a very capable towcar( We have had 2). It has 4wd and low range transmission so is more capable off road!

Both Kia and Hyundai have good warranty ours have been reliable.
