We currently have an elderly audi A4 which we use for towing, and a C4 Grand Picasso which is lovely but can't tow anything at all. Although the Audi is a good low mileage car, its kerbweight of 1395 is quite restrictive in terms of what caravan we can pull, so we are pondering trading both in and getting two replacement cars. The budget would not be great, the Audi is maybe worth £2.5k, the Citroen maybe £7k tops and we can dig down the back of the sofa and perhaps put another thousand or so to it (not a vast sum to buy two cars, I know!).
So, if we were starting to look for a tow car for around £7-8,000, what would you suggest we look at to give
1.the best mpg (both towing and not)
+ 2. widest range of vans we could tow
+ 3.lowest service costs
+ 4. greatest reliability
+ 5. Comfortably fitting an adult and two child seats in the back?
On my vague shortlist is the SMax, the Mondeo, Kia Sorrento and Honda CRV ...Would welcome more suggestions and thoughts

We have a KX2 Sorento, 2,2 diesel. AWD(2012)
It drives very well and has more than enough power (194 bhp and over 300lb/ft of torque). It has the same running gear as the Santa Fe. Last week it did 38mpg on a run to Dorset, not driven slowly!
It tows well too.Our model came out in 2010, so I am not sure if you will get one in your budget, but Santa Fe has been out longer I think.
The pre 2010 Sorento is a 2.dTD but is heavier and not as economical, but is a very capable towcar( We have had 2). It has 4wd and low range transmission so is more capable off road!
Both Kia and Hyundai have good warranty ours have been reliable.
