hello all im new to both caravans and this forum so please forgive me for asking a question that has probably been asked and answered a thousabd times before. Ive recently been given a 1990 abi marauder caravan which is in fantastic condition however i have had to get a towbar fitted to my car and i had to be (i was told) a removable swan neck (west falia to be exact) the caravan included a stabiliser which i am told will not fit on my bar (snake master arm i think its called)i understand the only stabiliser i can get would be something like an alko hitch for my van?? if this is the case then will any alko fit or does it have to be a certain type/model ?? or indeed is there any other type that anybody knows of that will do the job,i have 2 small children and i dont want to take any chances with safety .Thanks in advance for any help with this
your stabilizer will fit the van but not the tow ball you will need to buy this part which will fit onto the swan neck.Remember to load the van with heavy stuff over the axle and to (balance)spread the rest of the weight out. This clamps to the swan neck can be bought from caravan dealers or caravan shops.
Hi and welcome to the forum. Firstly you don't actually need a stabiliser as this won't correct an unstable outfit which many novices seem to think so the important issue is to load the caravan correctly to start off with. I use an Alko stabiliser myself merely to help in windy weather and going down hill but apart from that I always check the noseweight prior to any journey and always load the caravan correctly. The reason why you can't use the snake master stabiliser is because you need a standard towball (not detachable) for the spring type stabiliser to fit and lock in to directly on the back plate behind the towball fixing bolts so because you have a detachable you do need a caravan stabiliser. Alko manufacture different models but you need to find out what the MTPLM (maximum weight) of the caravan is first and then decide on which model stabiliser you need. The Alko 1300 is designed for caravans up to 1300kgs. the Alko 2000 up to 2000 kgs. and the 3000 for 2000 kgs. and over. If you have a standard hitch already fitted then you will have to interchange the two but there is procedure to do this regarding retaining the draw bar whilst you change them so you will need a kit that consists of a steel dowel and three sets of bushes. The job itself should only take about 10 mins. to do.
I think you can actually use one of those clamps Jeff on a detachable towball but it's a bit of fiddling about try to get the tension right on the spring and then locking the clamp up on the towball neck afterwards. The problem is then that the towball is not only heavy but more awkward to store as well so a hitch stabiliser on the caravan solves all that malarky in my view.
Your Marauder has an Al-Ko chassis so the smallest AKS 1300 hitch will do the job & if you are capable of using spanners fitting is easy diy. If you do get one post up on here for fitting advice. Not the slightest bit cheap at well over £200 though unless you can find one secondhand on ebay & then it will probably need new pads. If you do buy a new one from your local caravan shop you could ask them if they will do you a deal on fitting if you cannot diy because it is only a 10min job for anybody who has done it before.
However as pointed out a properly loaded lightweight caravan with tyre pressures all correct does not really need a stabiliser. I have a similar aged Abi & it tows ok without one.
