After trashing my jockey wheel on speed bumps, I wasn't going that fast! And buying a new pneumatic one i was wondering due to the rear of the car being low would it be ok to remove the wheel once hitched up to save wrecking this one too. With a large dog and two teenage girls my peugeot 508 SW is quite low at the rear as was my previous Passat
I had this problem on my last tow car, when it was just me, the wife and dog it was fine but when we took our nieces away and all the stuff 2 children come with I was getting problems with speed bumps, probably didn't help that being young I had lowered my car quite a bit, when I go out next time 1st time with new tow car I will deffenatly check a local speed bump and remove if jockey wheel if needed as I have a lovely black circle on my a frame covering now
Grampian91, we have a large dog 35+kgs, two teenage girls in the back. I also carry a socket set and a kojak jack. The nose weight is ok. The Passat I had previously also suffered the same problem. The speed bumps were very large I have to say. Thanks for the replies folks.
Just take it off if it's too low. Had to do this with my last Avondale. Have now lowered the towbar (properly by 1.5inches) to level the current Trigano and have absolutely no problem with nose wheel grounding. Some vans fix the raised jockey wheel lower than practical for towing.

We used to have a Passat which suffered in the same way. The suspension was soft and it had a long overhang at the back plus 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 dogs etc. Sorted it by fitting MAD spring assistors in the end.
If you have a side mounted jockey wheel then just undo the tightening clamp (the one on the side of the A frame), that will open the bracket & the whole assembly will lift out.
If you have a centre mounted jockey wheel then you have to loosen the tightening clamp & then wind the wheel fully down. This will separate the handle & the wheel allowing you to remove the handle from the top & the wheel from the bottom.
