Silly me! Being so new to this caravanning lark, I spent the whole of last night trying to find a two car for a Sterling Eccles Sport 464 by putting the wrong figures in! I was putting the laden weight into the miro figure! No wonder it wasn't coming up with much!
Upon discovering this, I try again this morning, thinking there would now be loads of options but no!!! It is still saying the Mondeo Estate diesel is at 91%!!! So, for a novice like me, still not a good match!
1443kg at 85% brings the kerbweight to 1660kg. The only thing that is standing out is the Defender, which I think from memory had a kerbweight of 2000kg.
I am ready to give up on this particular caravan and find something lighter! If it is proving this much of a pain,it is obviously not meant to be! Gggrrrr!!

Plenty of older Discos going cheap, ideal if you can find a good one. Depends on your budget, if you have more to spend Kia Sorrento is a popular towcar for larger caravans.
whoa madmum your confusing yourself ,the laden weight and miro (mass in running order) are basically one and the same thing ,i think you need to take a deep breath ,step back and tell us more details
make and model of caravan
weight unladen
weight fully loaded
you have already stated the present owner is towing with a passat ? any car in that weight /power bracket will suffice .as i said in your other thread a more powerfull towcar is often a recipe for disaster anyway as it makes you to confident and comfortable and very often leads to excessive speed whilst towing on motorways ,which is in itself lethal

Thanks, right now I need all the help I can get!!! The caravan is a Sterling Eccles Sport 564. The miro says 1290 and the mtplm is 1443. The overall length is 7.25m. It iis single axle. I am wondering if, as a novice, I should be looking at something smaller to tow?
We were looking all day yesterday at older vans, whichis the route we were going to go down but it is just that this one came up, complete with every extra you could imagine that we convinced ourselves this would be a good long term investment.
Thanks for your help.

To give an 85% match you are looking at a car with a kerbweight of 1700 kg. The 85% is only a guideline but ideally you want to be as close to this figure as possible.
its a nightmare searching this out but so far the best match i can up with for you would be a volvo v70 estate ,2.4 td diesel ,.a nice all round car to very reliable ,and comfortable with it .plenty of secondhand ones around from £1500 upwards depending on your budget .the v70 is capable of towing up to 1800 kg so well within your criteria
Fantastic! What a star you are! I will have a little look very soon. Do you know, I gave a feeling that is what my friend pulls her quasar 615 with.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate your help.

Don't rule the Mondeo out just yet. I tow the same weight with a Mondeo and it feels steadier than it was with a 4X4 which came out at well under 85%. I was concerned when I changed the car at going to 92% but the Mondeo is rock steady. Mine is the 130PS hatchback.
I currently run a v70 d5 and tow a similar weight. Flies up the hills with out complaint when we went to Cornwall last week. I'd recommend it though it is a bit of a barge lol

I have seen this mentioned a few times. It appears the Mondeo tows well even when close to the limit. It maybe worth trying it first.
Yep I can second the opinion of the Ford Mondeo I tow 1500kgs with our 09 2.0 tdci Mondeo est. and it's rock steady and not bad on fuel either, the boot is massive and it's also good to drive, I will certainly be buying another when the new one comes out next year. Also it has a 1800 kgs tow limit and a 90kgs noseweight limit which other manufactures just can't match and with a Stirling eccles you will need a high noseweight with the gas bottles in the front locker getting it below 85kgs will be hard work.

Aug - can't decided

Plus many more weekends at every possible chance!

If you did tow a trailer of 1800 kg and used all the cars payload though you would exceed the gross train weight of the car so the 1800 kg max towing weight is a bit misleading on the Mondeo. I thought they had lowered it to 1700 kg on the Mk 4.
