faced with the situation of my present car being a uneconomic fix ,i am currently looking for a new towcar ,i fancy a volvo v70 estate and most diesels are out of my price range so the question is would a 2.4 petrol v.70 be adequate for the job as we only have a small eldiss whirlwind 2 berth van with a all up weight of around 1300kg
To what I can find there are two versions of the 2.4 petrol V70 which the earlier (Y reg) model is 140 BHP and a later version (02 reg) has 170 BHP but can't find out what the engine torque is. However they both have a minimum kerbweight of 1528 kgs. so I would consider that judging by these figures this car should be adequate for your needs. I have a Volvo with a diesel engine merely because they produce more torque when climbing inclines and standing starts and has a heavier kerbweight due to being a diesel which provides more grip on the front wheels. The Volvo diesel engines (providing they have been serviced annually) will run for 200,000 miles round the clock quite easily but I don't know little about what the Volvo petrol engines are guaranteed.
Hi its just a thought, We had a 2006 Ford Focus II Zetec Estate diesel 2.0 TDCI and this pulled our van very well indeed. Fully laden weight of the van is 1300kgs but we always travel at about 1250 kgs. We changed to a 2009 V70 Volvo estate which had the same 2.0 ltr diesel engine 136bhp, but approx 400 kgs heavier, and in my opinion the Focus towed the van much better and returned 30 mpg over a distance of 300 miles. If i remember correctly the kerbweight of the focus inc of towbar was 1441 kgs (measured on weight bridge), this worked out at about 87% ratio. Oh and i found the volvo to rather un-comfy over large distances...
I also towed with exactly the same car on a 57 plate as 'TrigGLX' and also found it to be a good towcar as well. The only thing I didn't like about the 'Zetec' model was that you couldn't dim the dashboard lights at night and found it rather bright although I believe that the 'Ghia' and 'Titanium' models you could. The Volvo V50 is actually built on a Focus chassis but with a higher spec. as on the V50 model I can now actually dim the dash lights plus it has cruise control, climate control and generally a better build quality which makes it a better car in general. The Focus 2.0 diesel has a 4 cylinder engine with 136 BHP whereas my Volvo V50 has a 5 cylinder 2.4 diesel engine with 180 BHP which I find is a better towcar than the Focus in general although I would however consider the Focus as an alternative.
thanks for the replies ,we have just bought a ford mondeo 2.0 ltr zetec petrol estate ,ticked all the boxes ,lovely condition ,checked it on towsure and good match for the van .so went for it .
