We have always towed our TT with our 6 seater transit van and its fab as we can take everything you could imagine on holiday with us. Since getting our Caravan (swift challenger 636 1650kg) we haven't been able to tow with the van, therefore having to use our galaxy and 6 of the 7 seats limiting luggage/accessory space.
Yesterday we took delivery of our isabella capri awning which is huge and despite being carbon x is vey heavy, so would prefer to travel with this in our vehicle.
Anyway, to the point which vans/commercial vehicles have the better towing capacities and overall engine power to tow a heavy van?
Thanks to those who helped re 7 seater tow cars yesterday, but logic tells us the van route will be a better option as we can continue to take everything we need to away with us.
The one we have doesn't have big enough towing capacity believe it or not. So as the contract is up for renewal soon we are seeing if there are any more powerful, better towing vans out there.
I'm sure have a look at the vauxhaul,VW, Merc, renault range i'm sure all do 6 seater one of the must have a van within your towing range, are their any transits plated to tow higher weights ??
thanks Bessie, Yeah there are some with higher towing rates, but wanted to shop around first to see if the are others with better towing rates/engine power. I like all the Navaras and Ranger etc but cannot find a 6 seater, and by having extra seats anyway we loosing junk capacity!
Depends on your budget but either VW T4 or T5 van based people carriers would be ones to go for. T5s come with engines up to 180bhp depending on age. If you are buying secondhand, 140bhp 2.5 diesel is probably the one to go for. Many will have been used as taxis though so will have done mega mileage. They weigh just over 2tonnes & have tow weights in excess of 2 tonnes.
Thanks Tentz, just been looking at the VW Transporter panel van 180ps which has towing limit of 2500 . I am waiting to hear back if it can be produced with 6 seats and side windows.
If you do go with the panel van transporter there are lots of options for adding seats and windows as these are much sort after vans for converting into campers etc, the best place to look at these vans are the specialist forums for T4/5
Lol, I know bobababes! I've actually taken a shine to the Santa Fe, but still means we can't take everything and anything you could ever imagine. The i800 is tempting, but on the specs it shows as more luggage capacity in the Santa Fe?!
This may seem a daft idea but, Due to the new 15 year age limit thats been introduced in London, there are many well cared for Fairway cabs available all with the renowned Nissan engine.
You can fit a tow bar to one and it will tow anything, and put a seat in the front for a 6 seater
You could buy one for around 2K, or if you fancy something that will never rust a metro cab all cabs have the 2.5 diesel engines
I tow with a merc vito 115 dualiner. Absolutley love it. 150 bhp, tows our twin axle with ease and a brilliant vehicle for every day use. Had it 2 years now and so far, much more reliable than my VW transporter it replaced. ( hope I havn't jinxed it now having said this)
Colin, we've looked at the Vito, but its only a 2000 towing limit. We wanted as high as possible as our caravan is 1650 and were replacing it to 1800. We'd also like automatics and 4wd is favourable too, so think the Santa Fe is the choice at the moment. Not commercial as originally looked at, but the option was replace the commercial van we have or the family car. Our eldest is almost 15 and already pulling his face about coming away with us, so it's short term having to use the rear seat until we get large boot space again!
