Hi,
Anyone tow with a Freelander, have seen a nice 02 plate td4, looked at towcar.info site and it's approx. 88%, I have a Sterling Eccles Amethyst 1468 MTPLM.
Thanks
If it was the petrol version I would have said walk away, but its the diesel and as long as its tidy and you change the oil every 10,000 miles it should keep on going

The best people to ask would be owners of them, rather than hearsay or rumours.
Have a look over at http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/ they have a section for Freelanders (or Gaylanders as some call them) together with a part of the engine section on the Freelander.
On the Freelander section they have a poll of owners problems with them with the TD4 diesel having as many or slightly more problems than the petrol ones but the better engine (or the one with less problems) being the earlier 2L L series diesel.
I have a freelander TD4 and tow an Ace jubilee caravan with a MPTLM of 1475kg. The car tows without any problem at all and returns 30mpg when towing.
The 02 TD4 has the BMW engine which is extremely good I disagree with ST1100 as the best engine is the BMW , the earlier engine had its problems and was old in its design, the petrol engine is not so good, the 1.8 being very unreliable and the 2.5 very thirsty.
We have toed for many a mile now and not had any problems the car is very stable and has the benefit of a very good tow ball weight(140kg).
I can only speak from my own experience but I would recomend the vehicle.
