If you are changing your tow car and you know the weight of the van, I don't see what the problem is. Just make sure that your car is heavy enough. I see no sense in messing around on the borders of 85%, get something where the car will tow safely and comfortably. I tow at 68%.

That's what were trying to do. I had originally misunderstood the 85% thing thinking it was of the towing limit, as opposed to the kerbweight. And as our initial plans involved having to keep our current car a little longer I just wanted to ensure the limits were legal for the interim.

We have chopped and changed our minds so many times this weekend!

I'll be glad when we've finalised!
