The 2013 Berlingo, across the range. For smaller caravans like my own (under 1200kg), I`ve found this a very useful and roomy vehicle giving good economy when towing. The towbar load has been increased from the old rating which was 55kg . . . worth considering!

Hi peterws

We have the Peugeot Partner Teepee Outdoor 1.6Hdi, which is basically the same car as the berlingo. Yes the towbar load is now 70kg but unfortunately I have now been informed that legally the maximum it can tow is 1000kg. The plate on the drivers door states gross vehicle weight as 2040kg with a maximum train weight of 3040kg.
Strangely the V5 document states Technical permissible maximum towable mass of the trailer as 1300kg, which I am told to ignore.

We are most disappointed as we were considering purchasing our first caravan with a MRO of 1013kg and MTPLM of 1164kg.
My line of thinking was that the caravan was within guidelines as a possible match to our vehicle, as long as the caravan was not loaded to over 1164kg and that the car was not loaded to over 1876kg ( 1164 plus 1876 = 3040kgGTW ). Given the cars Mass In Service of 1601kg, that would have given us 276kg of cargo allowance in the car. Aprox 75kg for 1 passenger, 40kg for the dog and 161kg of luggage.

Any ones thoughts, much appreciated.

I need a lie down

The train weight is actual weight of car & trailer on weighbridge. Kerbweight of Berlingo is about 1400kg so you have plenty of loading margin of both car & caravan up to 1300kg without exceeding gtw.

If car was loaded to its max allowed & caravan was also loaded to max 1300kg then the train weight would be exceeded but it does not have to be so you can stay within the law & tow to max caravan weight as stated in handbook. If this was not the case then handbook would not state that you can tow 1300kg.

Probably where your informant's confusion arises is that when no max tow weight is quoted for vehicle then this can be ascertained by subtracting mgw of car from gtw. However most cars including Berlingo/Tepee do quote a max tow weight which is 1300kg & ok provided gtw is not exceeded.

You need to look at this logically, if neither max tow weight & gtw as written in car handbook is being exceeded, how can you be breaking the law?
