We're looking round for either a Jag or Mondeo for towing the van around. I know they are the same engine and floorpan in the 2.0 & 2.2 Diesels, so has anyone got opinions on either of these please?

My boss has had  2 company x types and bought one for his wife, I actually had his for a weekend once when he swapped to a merc, I thought it was awfull, very small only 5 gears and small boot, kids were dying to get back in my mondeo.

Funny he hated the C class Merc and hates his new BMW he'd prefer a x type all day long

Looking at the SE Jag or a Titanium or Zetec Mondeo. Not bothered about insurance costs and running costs would be about the same, I suppose. Wouldn't touch a Merc or BMW as we prefer FWD and those 2 are poor in snow. Don't want an MPV or 4WD. Some of the SE's have 6 speed box and the OH would prefer one with a Sat Nag. Ho-Hummm Decisions, decisions, decisions.

the x-type is unfortunately the mondeos poorer cousin.

you might as well stick with the ford as it 'does exactly what it says on the tin' the jag to me feels cheap in comparison.

Changed from a Mondeo 2.5 to a Xtype 2.2 sport estate a few months back must admit the Jag is a lot better drive than the mondy was, and has i think a better build quality than the ford version come with all the toys as standard sat nav, air con, phone and voice control  and most have full leather and you can fit a full size spare in the wheel well on top of that it pulls the van with no trouble and cheap service parts if you use a ford stealer garage.

Thanks for the views folks. I'll be dragged round the showrooms over the weekend and a look round Norfolk next week. Still unsure as to the choice but the OH likes the Sat Nag in the Jag.

You will pay a little more for the Jaguar than the Ford, though resale values for both are pretty poor. Apparently Jaguar dealers are cheaper for parts than Ford dealers, a lot of Ford owners buy parts from Jaguar dealers to save money.

Expect to get let out of T junctions easier with a Ford than a Jag too. I find junctions much easier to get out of with a Mondeo than I did with a Mercedes.

RWD is better for towing, the caravan unloads the driving wheels on a FWD car.
As for snow, FWD v RWD isn't the whole issue. A couple of years back when we had really bad snow, where I was working was at the bottom of a hill, covered in snow. All my workmates had FWD cars and got stuck, needed towing out. I was driving a Lexus LS400, no problem at all. The Lexus is RWD, the gentle power delivery of a V8 engine helps traction as does auto transmission.

My recommondation for a tow car from an engineering point of view would be either RWD or 4WD, as many cylinders as possible, the biggest engine you can afford, petrol converted to LPG (I am paying 66p/litre at the moment)

Tightwad, Andy!

I've seen the Mercs and BMW's struggling up our road but never had any problems with the Citroens. Anyhow, the boss has decided on a Jag 2.2 SE, so she's happy now. Deposit paid and collecting next week and happy pennies for ours in P.X.
I was very tempted with a Kia Carens 7seater MPV, but the boss wasn't happy with the seat comfort and the fact there was no cover for the rear when the 2 rear seats were down. Ho Hum!

Mondeo hatchback diesel every time, much more room in it and much bigger boot, more dealers for spares etc, great tow car, had one for 3 years 80,000 miles, no problems. It was a company car which went back when I left, detachable towbar (factory fitted was £500, now £600) but obviously can be had much cheaper from an independent fitter. Was fitted with 13 pin plug but not wired with a charging circuit.

The decision has been made!

We went for a Peugeot 407SW 2.0l Diesel.
I liked it, the boss liked it, and when she sat in it she felt comfy. Thanks for all your thoughts and suggestions.

(We couldn't find a suitable Mondeo as most in our price range were showing over 100k's, and the Jag we saw smelled of dogs and had dodgy brakes.))
