Hi I just need some advice please with regards to what we could tow with our Citreon Picasso 1.8.
We've just sold our clapped out Abbey Somerset and are currently on the look out for another caravan. The missus has seen a 1994 Fleetwood Colchester that she likes but fully laden the caravan is 1130kg but unladen its 855kg. According to the Towcar website the max we can tow is 1125kg. Now I know its only 5kg over our limit but im just really wary cos I know Picasso's aint the best caravan towers. Would we be ok cos I look at the unladen weight I think that perhaps we would cos its only 75kgs heavier than our previous van? As a family of 4 (me, missus and 2 young daughters) would we really put nearly 300kg of laden weight in the van?
We've seen lovely vans in our price range of £1000-£1500 but seeing the laden and unladen weights on caravan talk website really starts to rag my head as to what we could get away with.
hmmmm a hard one to quantify ,i,m assuming this is a petrol engine ,in which case your at the thin end of the wedge ,the weight is not really that important but i would do a match on towsure with your car and a similar weight van as i don't think you will have enough power .
as a afterthought we have just had to scrap our picasso 1.6 hdi 110 bhp due to gearbox and clutch going .so take care
Items soon add up and its very easy to overload the van.
Basic items before you start.
4.5kg gas bottle = actually weighs 10.5kg when full.
7kg weighs 17kg.
110 Ah battery 25kg
Hookup cable 5kg
2 - 10kg for water containers. Another 5 - 10kg for the fluids.
Spare wheel 25kg?
Pots, pans, kettle etc. Your already over 100kg before you start to pack clothes etc.
We bought sets of melamine cups dishes, trays etc. That weight soon adds up. We only take what we need now.
initially we took the full set. 8 trays, cups, dishes, plates, etc etc...
Overkill for 3 of us.
The big issue with the citroen maybe the gross train weight.
Personally i would not tow a caravan thats over the cars gross towing weight. Even at 5kg.
I wouldnt fancy getting pulled and them saying its not legal. Then having to prove otherwise.
Get something thats plated under the cars limits. And load it lightly. Take it to a weighbridge and be shocked that its going to be heavier than you thought.
We use a Berlingo on our Daisy May. She`ll be about 1100kg and pulls lovely.. Don`t know what the Picasso nose weight is, but if your load is in the car you should be fine. The petrol unit might be lighter than the diesel which could affect traction, I don`t know. They`re not small cars are they?
------------- Peripheral people don`t have as much excitement but they sure live longer

Theyre not small but but just seem very light and poor while towing.
Thanks for the advice folks and after speaking with missus we've decided that we wont got for anything which is 1100kg laden or above.
What is the max tow weight according to the plate on the car and stated in the handbook? If you were stopped by the police they would use the plated weights not the figures which you tell them are listed on an independent website.
We used to have a Xsara Picasso and I thought the max tow weights for the petrol models were under 1000kg.
