I'm just in the final stages of sealing a deal on a 5 year old kia sorento with just 15k on the clock. I had a quick look at the tyres and they were on the low side. I'm hoping that they will replace them. It's on my list to discuss with them tomorrow. But, I was also wondering that if they are the original tyres shouldn't they be replaced anyway? Is it the same as the caravan tyres? 5 years and they should be replaced whatever the wear? Just wanted some more welly behind my wealer dealings.

If they are the original tyres it would be a good idea to replace them. Theres no hard & fast rule & manufacturers do not put age limits on their tyres but if you consider most tyres are worn out & replaced within 3yrs, replacement after 5-6yrs is probably a good idea.

Its not something your dealer will be in favour of though if you want replacement within selling price so I suggest you examine tyres carefully, after 5yrs there are bound to be some cracks which you can point out to help your cause.

A car tyre doesn't stand for months without moving though so doesn't degrade nearly as much.

Just replaced the rear tyres on the wifes Megane convertable 14 years old 118,000 miles No cracking on the sidewalls but nearly on the limit for tread depth !

Tell them you will take it , as long as it comes with a full service and new tyres and a years MOT

Thanks for all your replies. She mentioned MOT but the car was first registered in September so I'm guessing that is due in Sept. she was going to get it serviced. I'll push on the tyres.   It was a 12k car so they can give me something extra I think.

A car with 15k on the clock won't need new tyre cos of wear either the clock has been wound back or the wheels changed I'd leave we'll alone without a full independent inspection

Really? I do about 16000 miles and went through 6 tyres last year. I'm a bit OCD about tyres though.

Depends on the vehicle and how you drive it but I would expect around 20,000 miles from the front wheels, about the same for the rear wheels on a rear wheel drive car.

The rear tyres on a front wheel drive never wear out, so I generally swap my rear wheels to the front when my fronts wear and put new ones on the rear to avoid the rear tyres breaking down with age.

Any vehicle needing 6 tyres in 15000 miles has something wrong with it.

You ran the tread off 6 tyres then there is something wrong with the car or your driving

a car with only 15k on the clock should not need new tyres,unless the tracking is out at the front and its scubbing the edges off.i think the best tyre is what i have HANKOOK.they wear really well and cost about £90 fitted each plus balance.whatever tyre you get you must get them balanced.

Thanks Michael. I think the sales girl mentioned Hankook tyres. I'd never heard of them so it's good to get a recommendation. I will look out for them in the future.

Hankook tyres are pretty good tyres IMO, they fill a gap between budget and paying for a brand name, decent quality without the brand price tag.
The tyre place next door to my work sell loads of them.

national tyres are doing a two for one offer today,my rear tyres are in good order but 8 years old,i am just wondering if i can get HANKOOK in the offer.mines a 4 x 4 HYUNDAI.the front are newish.might be worth a ring today.

Caravan manufacturers use Hankook so they must be good? Caravan manufacturers don't even bother to balance the wheels, they only fit Hankook tyres because they are cheap.
