tried my towing mirrors the other day ,they are milenco screw clamp ones ,never had a problem with them ,but on the mondeo they push the actual drivers mirror out of line ,any suggestions as which type are best for a mondeo mk2 estate ,and a link if possible

Have you tried clamping the towing mirrors along the bottom edge of the car door mirror as the gap clearance may just be slightly bigger? If they do fit along the bottom edge then just twist the support rod 180 degrees with the rod going upwards instead of downwards with the two clamps on the underside. Worth a try at least.
