HI all am waiting for our new van to be delivered a Lunar Delta TI which has a AKS 3004 tow hitch, I have had a removable tow bar fitted to my Volvo XC90 by the local Volvo dealer and it is all black including the ball, I don't know if this is paint or some type of teflon coating, and I am not sure wether I need to remove this coating or not. Again any suggestions would be a great help.

Remove the coating, use fine emery cloth and wire wool. Finally clean with something like brake cleaner. Any traces of the coating left will contaminate the pads on the Alko hitch. Remember to clean the ball every time before you use it for the same reason.

It's just a light coat of paint to protect the ball before use. I always found it sufficient to rub it off with a bit of sandpaper or emery cloth then wipe it with a clean rag.

As long as it's visibly clean and shiny that should be sufficient. The Alko hitch only has friction pads in it. Grease and oil is the big no no. There will be none of these lubricants involved in the paint process.

This old chestnut of removal of paint/coatings from towballs when using hitch-head stabilisers is coming up very frequently. I have an opinion on this since recently acquiring a new Alko type towball for our outfit. (my previous tow bar on the earlier car was already bare metal on its swan neck) I carefully removed the paint from this one with medium emery, finishing off with fine stuff then thinners. After the first outing with the caravan on (a blast down the A34 for a 20 mile return trip to try out the auto Saab) I checked the towball and was concerned to find a couple of high spots showing an uneven surface; I think this explained why it took a while to tension the wheel on my AKS1300 hitch. I then rubbed away again with medium emery followed by fine over the high spot areas and a couple of weeks ago on our first holiday of the year I was pleased to note a more successful operation of the tension wheel, and a more even witness marking on the ball from the pads. However, should I aspire to the dizzy heights of a future purchase of a newer car/towbar, I will be removing the paint/coating with proper paint remover to ensure that the surface of the ball is even. any thoughts on this peeps?
Brgds
Pete
