Looking to change our tow car later in the year, and have been looking at Kia Sorentos autos.

Because, eventually we hope to upgrade our 'van.

But looking at the uktow website, they say the towing weights on auto Kias' are way lower than manual ones.

Can anyone clear this up please?

The autobox must be a weak point.

The manufacturers figures are laregely based on what weight it can do a standing start on a 1 in 10 hill or steeper?

Maybe the boxes overheat if allowed to tow more, or it cannot pull away on a steep hill without breaking things?

Lots of auto's have lower towing figures.

it can only be a weak spot on specific motors, Auto boxes are fitted to most new heavy vehicles now due to the way they're built, there can be over 100 times more friction surface area to allow more power to be transfered to the drive so not all auto boxes are 'weaker' its down to the individual motor.

But to save you the trouble of searching, conclusions are that modern autos tow just as well as manuals but typically consume 10%-20% more fuel.

Auto / manual is a matter of personal preference, but many people who try autos never want to go back to manual.

I was a dyed in the wool manual bigot. until I got an auto, there is no way I would go back to a manual. Where an auto comes into its own is in heavy traffic, no aches and cramps in the left leg

kia sedona 2.9 is a brilliant tow car.i have a twin sprite quattro 6berth didnt even feel like i was towing anything.but i have changed to an auto now due to left hand injury,i now have a nissan elgrand import 3.1 diesal,and its even better.so its really down to personal choice.

Well my 2012 Seat Altea Xl TDI SE DSG (7 Speed Auto) and this car can tow 1500kg and up to now it has been awesome great on juice ......

Best to look at individual towing capacities when looking for cars then....?

Max towing weight 2200kg+ though, what tows them, a tractor!?

Close ...... but us owners prefer to call them Land Rovers and Range Rovers.

Mondeo 2.0 tdci manual max tow 1800kg, Powershift (semi auto) max tow 2000kg. On the Kias & Hyundais when the tow weight is reduced, sometimes so is the max nose weight.

We currently have a mk3 Mondeo TDCI, 115bhp though.

I thought the max towing weight was only 1500kgs, limiting us in the future for upgrading our 'van?
