We have an Avondale Dart 470/2 fitted with a motor mover mounted in front of the axle. When we have checked the nose weight of the van, loaded with our normal gear and with the awning placed over the axle, the nose weight is nearly 90kg. The car's towball max is 75kg.
The motor mover weighs 35kg. When we took every thing from out of thr front of the van it still weighted 84kg.
My question is if we have the mover re fitted to the rear of the axle will this make a big difference?
".....My question is if we have the mover re fitted to the rear of the axle will this make a big difference?"
As the motor movers main mass is perhaps only about 500mm - 600mm in front of the axle, therefore the moment affecting the noseweight is quite small.
Conversely, relocating mover (if possible?) the same distance behind the axle will result in same small moment. Albeit negative in regard to noseweight this time, but unlikely to give you the difference you need.
Is the spare wheel at the back of the 'van? If it ain't, put it there, also the awning. That should do it, no point in moving mover, its too nr the wheels to make a difference.
Thanks for your replies. The spare wheel is under the floor behind the axle. We have an end washroom and tried the awning laid just in front of the washroom door, across the van rather than length ways. Is this a safe place to travel with it?
Yes, you will have to put it in the washroom if you need to to get the noseweight down. A bit of weight at the back don't hurt. Some caravans have bike racks on the back & those with end kitchens seem to manage ok as well, a few kg over on the noseweight won't matter either. If you get pulled all they would do is put car/caravan over axle weigher if they wanted. Nobody is going to detach caravan & check noseweight. Noseweight varies all the time. If you check it on different surfaces it will be different so a few kgs over won't matter anyway.
Just had a mover fitted and when I asked whether it would be in front or behind the wheels was advised to have it in front of the wheels as if it is mounted behind it is more likely to "ground" on speed humps
My n/w was too high and dealer moved mover to rear of nwheels. Other things were done including moving spare a bit further back so not sure exactly what the effect of moving mover was. It was estimated that it added 2- 3 Kg therefore minus 4 - 6 Kg on n/w.
I agree with misterg I was told that having the motor mover fitted in front of the axle will add 2-3kgs to the noseweight of our van so it should be approximately the same for others. Noseweight can soon add up, make sure though when you measure it your caravan is on level ground. To get our noseweight down to 85-90 kg I have to have the awning and poles behind the axle and empty the hot water tank as it holds 8ltrs of water which is 8 kgs.

Janm55--I dont know your van but ours is a fixed bed. Before the dealer did a proper job on it (thanks to Trading Standards) I tried putting the spare as far back as I could inside the van under the bed. This did have a noticable effect on noseweight. Incidentally when I first complained to Bailey they said it was my problem as I had asked the dealer to put on the mover which weighed about 35 Kg and added 35 Kg to the noseweight.
A 35Kg mover CANNOT add 35Kg to the nose weight, unless it is bolted to the hitch. Its the see saw effect, the closer to the pivot (axle) the less force it exerts
Andy - yes you are right.See previous posts. The point I make here is what the dealer told me. Obvious lies to wriggle out of the warranty claim. Bailey said ex works n/w was 88 kg it was 100 when I took delivery.re point What it boils down to is the lack of integrity in certain quarters.Even the CC did not come clean. They said they were aware of n/w problems in certain vans but did not mention which ones because it would be unfair to manufacturers as others makes may have a problem which the club were not aware of. Member safety is obviously not an issue. Sorry about the rant it is a very so

Sorry nescafe 8 litres of water weighs over 9 and a half kilos. 9.584 to be precise
