Hi,

You could also consider going up to Middlesborough and then down to Whitby, it is further in Miles but can be not much difference in time as the A64 from the racecourse upto the roundabout can be very busy , also Malton and Pickering can be very congested.

If you plan to go peak time on Friday you may want to consider your options.

DO NOT go to Thirsk and then on the Helmsley road as you have to go up Sutton Bank which is Very Steep and Very Long and is not suitable for Caravans.

Regards.Andy

Our first trip with the van was to Whitby. Whilst we went a64 a169 route there we didn't come back that way. This was because the a169 has a steep descent through sleights towards Whitby and because of being new to towing caravan i wasn't keen on going back up it! Came back through via Scarborough.   I may have been too cautious though. The a64 can get busy and queues form where it changes down to one lane each direction at hop grove north east York.

Andy,

I have done the return route from Whitby many times with the van, and you are correct. There are several steep sections between Whitby and Pickering especially Sleighths and Hole of Horcum.

However if you have sensibly matched outfit it should be no problem

Andy.

I went up through Scarbrough , I did not fancy the big hills the other way. There are a few hills the Scarbrough way, but nothing like the other way. We went through Sleights the first time we went up there in the Motorhome and it was horrid.
