Just a word of warning ,the gearboxes are the weak point ,mine gave out over Easter ,to replace the box and fit new clutch which you should do I was quoted nearly £2000 ,I sold the car for spares as it was worth less than that in running order .good when they work bad when they go wrong

Towing weights vary a lot also. Make sure the one you buy has the capacity you need.

Which Picasso are you thinking about? The Xsara Picasso 2.0 diesel was only 92bhp and needed more power sometimes, the C4 Picasso and Grand Picasso 2.0 Hdi models are 140bhp but the towing weights vary especially if you have the egs gearbox versions.

We had a Xsara Picaso 2.0ltr diseal. We towed a Ranger 500/5 and had 3 kids in the car with us.It towed ok on the flat but come the hills down the gear box you had to go. But as I said our van was at the max tow weight for it and with kids etc. Great for town driving though I was averageing 44mpg but towing I was down as low as the high teens on a long run to the bottom of cornwall.

I know of three people who have towed with a Citroen in the past and eventually they all changed to a different towcar because there are better vehicles than a s**troen as some people call them. One changed to a Volvo V70, another changed to a Skoda Octavia and the other changed to a Hyundai.

We have a Citroen Xsara Picasso 2ltr HDI 90 bhp and find it ok but then we only tow a folding camper at 850kg, as already stated it is ok on the flat but we have to change down gear up hills, the other thing is the rear suspension is a bit on the soft side,I don't know what type of suspension it uses on the rear but looking underneath there does not appear to be any springs, coil or otherwise.

I have had  my Picasso 2.0 HDI for 5 years and tow a 2 birth van i went from Cheshire to St Austell in Cornwall on just under 3/4 of a tank of fuel. Not bad going i would have thought. Hills, i had to go down one or two gears but you would have to do the same with a lot of cars out there, but went up fairly steep hills no problem. For me Good tow car if your van isn't too heavy, mine is 1045 kgs. 17

i have a bailey ranger 470/4 and i tow it with c4 grand picasso 1.8 vt+ its petrol but this was before i got into caravaning. now its great at towing the ranger on level roads but soon as you hit inclines whell im down to 2nd gear which isnt good.so im looking to upgrade to the c4 2ltr hdi egs which i think is 134 bhp which is semi auto deisel. acording to practicle caravan it is more than what i need for the caravan i have. other cars for this sort of caravan are the ford mondeo 2.2 dci, skoda 1.9 and kia sadona,s are ample enough to tow a good size caravan

I have a 1.6 petrol xsara picasso towing a compass 304 exlore MIRO 900kg MTPLM 1050KG. I have read a lot on here about weights / power e.t.c and think there is a lot of unnecessary fuss. I towed the van from Conwy (north Wales) to Bath absolutely no problem, you wouldn't know it was there most of the time. I went up several very steep hills and was down to second but very few other vehicles wouldn't have to change down either. I think too many people purchase far too powerful a car to appease their unnecessary fears when in reality if you aren't touring abroad having a slightly underpowered car is'nt that big an issue. The slightly higher fuel consumption is totally negated by the expense of buying a bigger car. I would recommend the picasso, it felt a very stable tow, just stay inside the 85% rule and you'll be fine.

The higher fuel consumption is because the engine is under a lot of strain.

A more powerful car will probably last longer.

I guess a lot depends on the amount of usage. As I said if your touring all over Europe then I would say a well powered diesel is a sound investment. If you are just trundling to the coast 4 or 5 times a year then probably not.

I thought the 1.6 petrol Xsara Picasso had a max towing weight of 900kg. That was the reason I went for the diesel version.
