Fit some town and country tyres to the front wheels, this will give you plenty of grip, or go to a scrappy and get a pare of steel wheels the same size and get them fitted to them then when you go away just change the fronts,

To revers just lift the clutch gently without the accelerator and the engine power should be sufficient to push the van back, only use the acceleration if required but with ballet shoes on

Town & country tyres on the front won't do much for driveability, comfort & road noise in normal use.

Think you'll find that reverse gear is closer to first than second.

I am talking about a normal car and not someone who always has to use the low box in their defender every time they have to do a bit of reversing

So was I.

tho that low box does make for easier manoeuvring :)

on most cars the ratio for reverse is less than 2nd though.

The Vectra with the F20 box has a 1st gear of 3.55:1 2nd is 2.16:1 whilst reverse is 3.33:1

Thanks for replies.   It was fine reversing it back into storage space.   I was wondering if the caravan breaks had not disengaged before.    I thought that the breaks disengage as the hitch is pushed back and the wheels start to move, but is there an impact of reversing up a slope (this pitch had a slight incline) though?
