Hi to you all lovely day for a change,i need one of you volvo drivers to please advise me on the towing weights, max towing weight taking into account the 85% criteria,the nose weight plus the height of the tow ball, the car concerned is a 2000 model V40 i 2 litre,i am in the process of buying the car just for towing my caravan which is 680kg max load 900kg with a nose weight of 70kgs

Not a problem at all your car should weigh something like 1280 kgs
it 85% weight for ideal guideline for towing is 1088kgs AND MAX TOW OF 1400 kgs
noseweight of 75kgs
all towbars should be in the range of 370 to 420mm from the floor
Your Volvo will be fine !

Is the Volvo V40 a petrol or diesel as I may be able to confirm some figures for you?

Can't find a 2000 model but these figures are based on a 2001 model.

Minimum kerbweight = 1280 kgs. (but it does state 1400 kgs. for a braked trailer).

Engine = 2.0 ltr. petrol with a manual gearbox = 136 BHP (no torque details specified).

The official maximum towball noseweight for the Volvo V40 estate is 75 kgs.

So 85% of 1280 kgs. = 1088 kgs. so it looks like you are well in the that margin with the caravan details.

The actual match (1280 kgs. with 900 kgs. MTPLM) works out at just over 70%. Hope this information helps

Apparently there's no difference as the details for the 'auto' gearbox are identical to that of the 'manual' so the figures are exactly the same.
