Hi people I'm looking to getting a new car, as I'm new to caravaning I want one that's going to last I've got £3500 to spend on a diesel my caravan only light weight at 750kg but would be upgrading to newer model
next year.any help would be very welcome
You probably need to consider how big/heavy your next van will be if upgrading soon. That should determine your new tow car. Pretty much most cars will tow what you have now at just 750kg.
If your getting something around 1200-1300kgs MPTLM then you should be looking at something Mondeo/Passat sized. We used to have an 02 Passat Estate which was a great all rounder, your budget will get you a good example of the B5.5 model (2001to 2005). Or else a late model Mk3 Mondeo is generally rated on here as a good tow car whilst being a great drive solo too. If you don't need an estate a Skoda Superb is another option.
Don't forget to factor in the cost of a tow bar when looking at cars in your budget.
I would avoid any Vauxhall for towing really as only a minority use them for towing and not that popular. They lack the power and torque compared to other suitable towcars on the market and having a Zafira petrol 16 valve 1.8i myself I found it hard to struggle on the slightest incline. Since then I have had 2 Ford Focus estates and now the Volvo but would never return to a Vauxhall for towing. Chatting on the rally field over the years I found that many came to the same conclusion.
I would always recommend an auto. Choose the biggest engine you can afford to pour fuel into. If you go for a petrol get it converted to LPG, fuel costs are halved.
Estates will fit all the bits you didn't think you needed.
I went for a Range Rover 4.6 HSE, 15-17mpg on LPG, equivalent to 30mpg
