I'm with you dixie on this with regard to future-proofing. My previous Saab (as I suspect a lot of other leading makes) had 13 pin electrics fitted, as part of the dealer tow bar fit. Our present one did not (I think the previous owner only used the car to tow a small trailer) I therefore obtained a dedicated wiring kit from P F Jones (great guys) and fitted it.
Apart from any future-proofing, there is the question of cars fitted with their own electronic stability programmes, and of course ABS. As long as the proper wiring kit is fitted, the car will behave correctly with a trailer/caravan hooked up. (naturally, some makes will need programming) All points to consider in the interests of safe towing.
