Hi all. I am looking to you all for some advice and reassurance. We are still looking to buy our first caravan. I drive a 1.6petrol renault Megan grand scenic 2007 model. I think kerb weight is 1200kgs. I was looking to tow a gross weight of 1000kgs. I am not an experienced 'tow-er' having only towed my old TT twice. Would this be ok do you think

Hi marksarahandfamily I had a scenic 20ltr petrol 98 model and towed a Eldiss typhoon the cars kerb weight was 1300 and the van was 1200, the car towed but had to use the gears a lot but if your careful and don't rush it should be fine, a quick calculation it looks around 84%,i'm sure someone will be along later to give more advice as this is a great place and loads of information to help you out.
I have changed my car for a Peugeot 407sw now 20ltr diesel, much better for towing my van.

Not really enough info, go to whattowcar.com and fill out the form just pick any caravan and change the weights to 1000kg

But I think you will struggle to find a van that weighs 1000kg gross allowing 200 kg for gear and clothes etc that leaves your van weighing 800kg
You would be better finding a van that fits your requirements and then changing your car if needs be

I've seen quite a few vans around 700-800 kgs. I'm hoping to get one of these soon....

Yes provided car handbook states a max tow weight of 1000kg it is ok to tow that weight. Plenty of older caravans with max weight of less than that. 1.6 petrol will struggle a bit on hills & you will have to use the gears but it will be legal to tow.
