Just came back from are holiday can't believe how many big caravans came shooting past us. I find it hard to keep speed down to 60 but lots of unit must of been doing 70 no wonder you see more caravans in bits on the side of the motorway
Too easy to let your speed drift on motorway journeys. I love my cruise control set it at 60 mph and it keeps your speed safe and legal. For me it's essential on my towcar.

Me too. I usually set the cruise to 63, as according to the GPS on my 'nav the speedo is 3mph fast at that speed. Job done.
Although our outfit is very capable of going much faster (done it on private roads officer) it just isn't worth it.
We recently went to France for the first time with a friend and his family. They tow a heavy Hymer with an XC90 and on the way to Dover, where we were due to meet-up, he flew past me (I was 'trundling' along at 60).
On the ferry, he cheerfully told me that he normally tows at 75 because his caravan feels so stable at that speed.
Now, I'm not that bothered about speed limits personally but towing a caravan is just not inherently stable, no matter what you are towing it with and I feel that 60 is a sensible maximum.
The most ironic thing is that, once on site, this same friend insisted on his kids wearing helmets when using their scooters

At least he got something right regarding the kids. Does he hold a B+E licence because if he doesn't and he is caught, he may get a quite a number of points. If he does, he will still get points for speeding and I think the minimum is 6 points as two offences. One for speeding and one for driving in a dangerous and unsafe manner.

Does anyone consider that a deterrent? Has anyone ever been stopped for speeding while towing? Anyone you know? Friend of a friend? Second cousin of your hairdresser's uncle?
Certainly not the reason for me...

We have yet to reach 60mph!!!!! Partly because we are newbies and the caravan and car are brand new so a lot of stuff to learn. But a good deterrent is the display showing constant mpg!!!! We get an avarage of 27mpg towing around 55mph (sat nav speed not car reading). If we go up to 57 fuel consumption drops dramatically to less than 20mpg. On Friday we had 120 miles to go. Satnav said it would take 2 hours 20 minutes (not knowing we were towing). Keeping our speed down took us 2 hours and 45 minutes, not alot of differenceand we got there nice and relaxed.

The problem is a lot of them don't even realise they are breaking the law. Got chatting to a neighbour on a campsite and the subject came up he said we are seldom below 70 when towing. I said being relatively new to towing we stick to the speed limits. His reply was we are only doing 3 or 4miles an hour more. I pointed out that on a motorway the limit for a vehicle towing anything is 60 and he said no you are wrong.
The other thing that annoys me is no towing mirrors and using the outside lane of a 3 lane motorway
I agree fully with all the comments especially regarding the fact that a car/caravan outfit is not inherently stable (obviously due to the very shape of the 'van and the position of the hitch relative to the rear axle etc etc). But as our Saab has a nice short rear overhang, and is a nice weight against the caravan thus quite stable, I find it very comfortable towing at around 60. This also suits me firstly to avoid holding up/being held up by HGVs and secondly to avoid being held up on motorways by some of the Joe Publics, crawling along at 55mph, who according to my HGV driving lad drives him right up the wall. I have to presume that this type of individual is trying to wrest every last mile out of each gallon of fuel after reading the maker's consumption claims.
BTW, ours reads between 28-32 mpg towing at around 60 and the auto never gets up to 6th, so I am pretty chuffed with that.
Issym, I take it your Antara is diesel? With that weight of car, I reckon you are doing quite well, especially if you are loaded! (I mean your outfit not necessarily your pocket - lol)
